I noticed the bike path elephant (next to the community garden, roughly behind Brooks Rite Aid) has been tipped over once more. It appears to have been in this state for several days.

It may just be my imagination (I do use that portion of the path infrequently) but poor Mr.(Mrs.) Elephant* seems to be a victim of hazing more often these days.

I am not sure who originally put the sculpture there, but it has been a fixture for as long as I've lived here, and I'm wondering what, if anything could (or should) be done to prevent vandalism? Should it be protected?

Sure, I get many questions from perplexed visitors:
Them: what is that?
Me: Oh, it's an elephant, of course.

Yet regardless of one's opinion of the artistic merit, I think vandalism speaks poorly for the community as a whole.

* Does he/she have another name?

It is really going to happen this time, no lie.

The Commmunity Yard Sale is going to take place tomorrow (Sunday, August 3rd) from 11am to 3pm at Hodgkins Park on Holland Street (very close to Davis Square). All proceeds will be benefiting the Somerville Homeless Coalition.

If you have things you wish to donate to the cause, please show up between 10am and noon. Otherwise, please come by and get some awesome deals on just about anything you could possibly want.

We've gotten pretty good press coverage (hey, we made the Metro) so I expect a pretty turn out.

It is also [livejournal.com profile] ron_newman's birthday. He would like you to be there and you don't want to make [livejournal.com profile] ron_newman mad.

If you can't show up tomorrow and would like to give some money to the SHC as part of this fundraiser, you can do so here.

I was about to try the breakfast at Green Tomato 2 this morning, but decided I'd better call first. Good thing I did. They did not open on August 1st as originally advertised. They're now shooting for a "soft opening" on Thursday, August 7, followed by an official opening on Sunday, August 17.

(Green Tomato 2 is the restuarant replacing Boloco, at 187 Elm Street.)

I got a cool old bookshelf at a yard sale today. Because I'm familiar with the line and make, I know that there's nice quarter-sawn oak under the several thick layers of shiny (and ugly) paint that someone applied. I am not interested in stripping it myself, because of the toxicity of the chemicals involved, and because it's a lot of work (or so I'm told). Does anyone know of a place where I could take this or a person who specializes in this sort of thing? I have a car, so outside the area is fine. Thanks!
