"Gloom Pop" band The Milling Gowns (members from Cambridge & Somerville) celebrates the release of their 11-song album "Diving Bell Shallows" with a show on Saturday September 13th at The Lily Pad, 1353 Cambridge St (Inman Sq), Cambridge MA.

Already a non-typical band whose main instrumentation is classically-influenced piano and viola along with bass and drums, The Milling Gowns further expand their orchestral sound for this album with the addition of over 25 guest musicians. Cambridge pianist Sharon Crumrine and violist Betty Widerski arranged Davis Sq. singer/songwriter M.'s songs to include, at various times, a full string section, oboe, lever harp, french horn, and choir.

The band has reserved the Lily Pad for the entire evening. Doors for the public open at 8:45pm, with a $10 requested donation.

The opening performer will be local singer/songwriter Dan Blakeslee, who also guested on "Diving Bell Shallows." Then The Milling Gowns will take the stage. The Lily Pad's 7-foot Kawai grand piano will allow pianist Sharon Crumrine to fully realize the songs' elegant keyboard parts, and guest string players and vocalists will recreate their studio parts live.

Copies of the new album, as well as the band's prior 5-song EP "Light of the World Shine on Me", will be available at the show. Both albums may also be sampled and ordered from the band's website http://themillinggowns.com, and from CD Baby and various digital outlets.

---------------

The Milling Gowns showcases the original songs of baritone singer M. backed by darkly elegant piano and viola, punctuated with drums and bass. Their "gloom pop" sound ranges from upbeat with subliminal sadness to slow textured laments.

There was just a memorial of some sort on the corner of Packard and Powder House, scaring the dickens out of me with what I think was a 3 gun salute. Followed by taps. The uniforms involved looked American Legion-ish.

Any thoughts?

I have in my possession multiple Time Life "Giants of Jazz" LP boxed sets. I have 24 of the possible 28 that were issued in 1979. Each box features an artist (and, in a few cases, multiple artists such as "The Guitarists"). Each boxed set contains 3 LPs and a book about the artist. The boxes have very slight age wear and fading, but the set is in overall great condition. I am looking for offers. I do know a ballpark of what these are worth, so please be fair in your offers.

Thanks!

Hello all,

I've looked through the "banking" tag and don't see anything that specifically addresses this, so I'll go ahead and ask: I'm currently with Wainwirght and I like a lot of things about them, but I depend upon a lot of online features that they just don't have, which unfortunately has me considering changing banks. I'd consider switching to a bank that had all of the following:

  • Free billpay that consistently deducts money when the check is cut, not when it is cashed

  • Online statements going back indefinitely (or at least more than a month or two)

  • No charge for transferring between multiple checking accounts

  • A decent online banking interface

  • A branch and ATM somewhere within 5ish miles of the Davis/Porter sq area

Wainwright meets, at least arguably, the last three requirements, but not the first two as far as I've been able to tell.
Does anyone know a bank that meets all these criteria and that they've been happy with in terms of customer service and all that? One that still has the progressive hippie-fu of wainwright would be nice, if such exists.

I'm about to go attend a few weddings and realize I haven't gotten a new suit or sportsjacket since my teens. I used to go to some ol' time classic Mens stores where you basically went around with a salesperson who worked with you to pick out a few outfits, then got you fitted right there in the store. Is there anything equivalent to that around the Cambridge/Somerville area?

If not, any recommendation of where to get a nice suit or sportsjacket in the area?

Grab your camera and head for the other side of McGrath Highway.
You are invited to be part of an exciting new Somerville art experiment!

Interpreting East Somerville takes one neighborhood as it's subject, and invites you to bring your perspective (and your camera!) and interpret what you see and how you see it. The possibilities are as wide as your eye.

people • discoveries • houses • changes • streets • gardens
motion • family • celebrations • shapes • lights • mysteries
colors • miracles • sidewalks • problems • signs • secrets
friends • lines • events • windows • you • them • interpretations

Show the world. Show your world. Deadline to enter is October 20, 2008.

Chosen entries will be exhibited throughout Somerville City Hall as part of a group show beginning November 6, 2008.
