While we are on the topic of community development, does anyone have an explanation for there now being a third convenience store in Teele Square within view of the other two?

Click for snarky panorama )

Beyond the fact that I don't feel like these stores contribute much (if anything) to the community, I'm kind of wondering how it is that this neighborhood can even support three of them (four if you count the Indian market down the street that sells pretty much all the same stuff).

I don't mean to be such a community troll about these things, but I live in that neighborhood and it is starting to get a little depressing...

Today's life lesson, and a hint for the locals:

So I'm sleep-deprived and crabby from work as I drive into Davis Square to go to the post office, about 4pm today.  As I pull into a handy metered spot, a street tough in blue jeans and jean jacket and square gold earring accosts me and claims he's saving the spot for his girlfriend "who's going around the block".  I get rather annoyed at the Somerville habit of thinking public streets can be reserved, so I get out of the car anyway.  He's upset by this and clearly wants to get rather physical about it, but I ignore him, feed the meter, and go off to the post office.  Bad judgment call, sigh.  He still wants to make a fight out of it, but I stay away from him and keep walking.

I come out minutes later, and this fellow is gone...but the guy nearby taking his cigarette break is looking at me rather intently.  I don't see anything wrong with the car before I drive off, but the flat tire is evident before I get to Porter Square.  My tire got knifed, and now I need a new one.  Actually, more likely four, because my particular car is picky about matching tires.

So I walk back over to the business where our Potential Witness is from.  I think they know what happened, but this fellow doesn't even come up front.  They say he didn't see anything, so I have nothing useful to take to the cops.  *sigh*  I can understand his/their response, though.

So this is just by way of warning that if this fellow wants his space in Davis Square, let him have it.  The parking spot, I mean.  It isn't worth it.  He's not hard to identify as Trouble, fortunately.  You won't have any question in your mind if you see him.  Has anyone else?

I'm taking this almost sanguinely; the tires weren't expensive and they're half used up.  I'd have been more upset if he keyed my car.

Aside: I've been around here 15 years, and I've never had trouble like this before-- I expect many more quiet years, especially if I act slightly smarter.  I still think it's generally a pretty safe area.

My husband and I are currently living in a lovely apartment right in Powderhouse Square, but we're moving out at the end of July.  I'm posting this as a favor to the owners.  It's a nice place and a nice location (easy walk to the Davis T -- we do the walk every day).  We have enjoyed living here, but we're moving to the San Francisco bay area.

Please contact the owners directly if interested: ldberg04@yahoo.com or 617-489-6471 (leave a message for Dianne Berg).

Basic specifications:

spacious 1 bedroom, 1 full bath (~850 sq. ft)
large, 30-foot long living room
sunny, open layout with lots of large windows
sun-room
updated kitchen w/ dishwasher and garbage disposal + lots of cabinets
updated bathroom
lots of closet space
hardwood floors
coin-operated laundry on same floor
part of a 4-unit building, built circa 1890
smoke-free environment
$1695/month

No pets please.  The lease would be for 13 months (8/1/09 until 8/31/10).  Again, please contact the owners directly if interested (Dianne Berg at ldberg04@yahoo.com or 617-489-6471).

I was driving home and passed a few people putting stuff out on Cedar Ave. I didn't get to jump out of the car but I saw some luggage. I saw a bench, the kind you put things in. I saw a hamper and some plastic baskets. Kind of like what you'd see used as a barrel in a bedroom.
I hope someone takes it, the stuff looked to be in great condition.

Not to follow a recent trend on this community, but...

I'm subletting my room in a 3 BR apartment for the month of July. It's technically in Medford, but a 10-15 minute walk from Davis Square, off of Warner St. Rent is cheap: $485 each plus utilities, and it's got everything you'd need -- gas stove, coin-op laundry in basement, dishwasher, parking, plenty of space. The room will be partially furnished. Roommates are female grad students at Tufts in their 20s who are quiet, friendly, and respectful and looking for someone who will be the same.

Is there any place near Davis, or farther afield, where I can donate magazines in good condition that I've already read e.g. Economist and Science? If not, I will settle for recycling, but it seems a shame to waste them.
