So we just moved to our new place, back to Davis, phew. We moved in knowing from the realtor and other tenants that the landlady is kinda crazy. There's all sorts of trash outside the apartment: microwave, rusted out grills, broken plastic tubs and more. It all belongs to the landlady ( who lives in Belmont and never comes over here, apparently ). I dragged as much as I could to the curb last night with a big exception.

We found a 30 gallon plastic barrel of gasoline and two smaller containers. They sit in a sunny spot outside the backdoor and have apparently been there for at least 2 years. They're so that the 3ish times a year her kids mow the lawn, they can fill the mower.

My questions are: does anyone know if it's legal to store gas like that? Other tenants have said that she won't move it, and I don't want my first interraction with her to be negative, but I've already had a housefire once this year and I don't want to have another, what would you do in that situation? My Fiance suggested using it to fill our scooters, but not *really* knowing what's in there makes me hesitate to do that. I guess I'm just looking for any help on the subject that I can get.

Hi, this may be a dumb question but I don't know the answer - pardon me if it's in the archive somewhere.

In Somerville, if you have a party/BBQ what are the rules about alcohol and open containers. Said party would be on the driveway that runs along the side of the house and behind the house - so we would be partially viewable from a main street.

What public drinking rules should I be aware of?

Thanks

Petition signing tomorrow night at Somerville Theatre. Original posting here:

http://community.livejournal.com/davis_square/1791316.html

6:30-8:30, I'll be in the lobby, hope to see you there!

Edited: I'll have a second petition specifically worded for non Somerville voting folks who care enough to stop by, because even though the city won't recognize those for the appeal officially, I agree that it's good to know that there are people outside the community who care about this as well!!

Time Trade Circle is proud to present:

Another Economy is Possible: Introduction to the Solidarity Economy

A workshop led by Professor Julie Mattaei

Tuesday June 16, 2009, 6:30 p.m.

Free!

Dominant economic institutions, based on narrow, materialist self-interest, profit-motivation and consumerism, are in crisis. While we have been taught TINA - there is no alternative - in fact we are surrounded by a rich diversity of economic practices and institutions that are rooted in values of sharing, cooperation, equality, sustainability and justice. This "solidarity economy" is growing on every continent, often in response to the crises created by the dominant system.

This workshop will introduce the solidarity economy framework and discuss some of the wide variety of old and new practices and institutions that are springing up (including Time Banks.) Then we will brainstorm about ways we can reclaim our economic power and support ourselves, our families and our communities by creatively participating in this exciting movement.

Julie Mattaei is a co-founder and board member of the U.S.  Solidarity Economy Network; she's a professor of economics at Wellesley College where teaches feminist economics and radical economics; she lives in Cornerstone Cohousing.

Following the workshop, there will be an orientation for the local time bank, Time Trade Circle, for those who are intersted. See TimeTradeCircle.org.

Tried memories, tags, mbta.com, etc. And I'm talking tree & ground nuts, not all us crazies. *g*

Which restaurants in Davis Square & Somerville are safest for those with nut allergies?
Apparently, my target person's tastes run toward Italian or bbq {fyi 1: Web search revealed one customer who had trouble with Red Bones}). And for this sufferer, airborne particles or utensils used to cut nuts(by previous customer, even) are triggers.
fyi 2: Greek Corner restaurant sez all dishes are safe but the dolma, which include pine nuts. But this friend doesn't like Greek, so my search continues.

Okay, [livejournal.com profile] davis_square, Google Maps has failed me, so I turn to you. Best place to look at ergonomic office furniture, ideally out this way, but anywhere T-accessible would do in a pinch? I'm looking for someplace I can actually try the stuff out, rather than shooting in the dark by ordering on-line.

Mostly, I'm looking for funky not-chair chairs -- kneeling chairs or other such options.

There were some threads a while ago about people not wanting to get phone books delivered to them. Carl Sciortino blogs on this topic; apparently he proposed a bill to cut down on unwanted phone book delivery and there's a public hearing tomorrow.

I always get great advice in this community, so here goes: Some friends and I want to spend a day paddling canoes and kayaks on a lake or river. We have 2 boats but may need or want to rent more depending on how many of us show. Any recommendations? We're willing to drive a few hours away from Boston. Nothing beats personal recommendations... thanks!
