$5 for $10 at Lyndell's; I like this one...too often the Lyndell's ones are great deals....like $20 for $50, which is lovely if you're planning on catering a party or something (last spring I had a cold, and 3 parties in one weekend, and I spent a $50 voucher and just brought Lyndell's to everyone, and it was really handy, but seriously; I had a tote bag and a half of baked goods).

The second is for $15 for $35 of dry cleaning at Life Without Laundry. Last spring there was a Life Without Laundry offer on Groupon, and I noticed that they were picking up anywhere in Cambridge, but not in 02144 or 02143, and I sent them mail, as to get to some of the Cambridge locations you had to go *through* Somerville from their pick up place. In response, the nice people at Life Without Laundry said 'oh, we like Davis Square people', and changed their policy that *day* to include those zip codes. Since then they've expanded to do all of Somerville. Yay them.

Coupme does not have links for referrals. If you'd like to mention thespian@sleepingcat.com as your referrer, I'd be happy. But mostly I'm happy to have bought 4 Lyndell's coupons. OM NOM.

This morning at about 5:30, I was out for my early morning exercise and was greeted by a doberman running across College Ave. to say "hello" - not in the "hi-there-I-am-curious-about-you-and-would-like-to-play" manner, but in a "you-have-invaded-my-space-and-I-would-like-to-crush-your-testicles" way.  Fortunately, the dog stopped short about 2 yards from me and returned to the young woman who had taken the dog out for a walk.

This happened right at the entrance to the Tufts "Dog Walk" area -- you know it by the sign that reads "No Dogs Allowed" (that's a subject for another day).  This is actually the second times in a couple of months that this same dog walked by the same woman has done with this.

Other than buying new underwear or never going outside again, what should I do?  It's obvious that the two of them have some issues -- the dog isn't well trained, it's too big for her, she needs a better leash system...something.  I would hate for someone to get hurt or for the dog to get pepper sprayed, but it's really a bit terrifying for the unruly beast to come sprinting angrily toward you and I understand harsh action when that happens.

I've never owned a dog, so I don't want to be too harsh, but there are some requirements for responsible dog ownership in densely packed urban areas.

Suggestions?  Has anyone else had issues with this pair?

Would someone who is following the primaries for Tuesday more closely please post a bit about who is running for what, or what Progressive Democrats of Somerville have to say about any of them. Or at least some links.

Thanks!

So I bought the $50 door card for concerts at Johnny D's, and then proceeded to have. Uhm. One hell of a summer. I've had no chance to get there, and it expires in 13 days, on September 23rd.

So, if you see something that you'd like to see, in the next 13 days, and want in, I'll give it to you. I'd prefer to give it to a definite, but if you're a maybe, say so, and I'll give it to a maybe if no definites ask.

This is *not* for food; this is a door-fee card only. It'll get you in but then food and drink is up to you.

I need your email address to gift the Groupon to you, so responses to this are screened so you can post it. I'll edit it when I give it to someone.

EDIT: I have given the groupon to [livejournal.com profile] kelkyag, who is going to tomorrow night's Booty Vortex show. If you contact them, they are willing to use the card to take others into the show, or to pass it on to someone else who is going to something later in the next fortnight so it can be used up good.

A friend and I hit the Foundry on its opening night, and were pleasantly surprised not to have a wait for a table for two (it was a bit early, just before 6, but still).

The food was good (not great, but good), the atmosphere pleasant, and the service friendly and efficient, even on their opening night, which I found admirable. It's very much a 2010 restaurant, in that it has a charcuterie plate, a range of "classic cocktails," a selection of flatbreads and the standard high-brow-comfort-foods that seem to be on every menu in the area this summer (e.g. heirloom tomato salad, pasta with goat cheese, pork belly confit).

I had the steak frites, and my vegetarian friend had the veggie kebabs. They were both quite good, and the steak was served as rare as I had requested. We also sampled several of the classic cocktails; the ginger smash was especially good.

Overall, a nice addition to the neighborhood, and I hope they'll manage to last in that space longer than Bowl & Board did.

I got the Groupon deal for MetroRock when it was offered in June; $49 for a one-month membership, full equipment rental and one beginner climbing class. It's a crazy good deal, but I'm not going to use it. Anyone want to buy it off me?

It's transferrable, but is limited to one per person. If you've used a deal from the same offer (June) before, they won't let you use it; if you've used one from a different time it was offered, you should be fine. From what I understand, you can use it if you're already a member; but you'd have to make sure with them. It expires on December 23rd.

There she goes!

The Festival celebrates the invention of Marshmallow Fluff in 1917 in Union Square and serves to unite the diverse Somerville community around a common love of Marshmallowy craziness.

We’re expecting around 5,000 Fluff-hungry attendees to descend upon Union Square so we need lots of help. This free celebration of kitsch and community includes live music, games for kids and adults, a cooking contest, craft and food vendors and, of course, lots of Marshmallow Fluff! The festival is presented by Union Square Main Streets as part of the Somerville Arts Council’s ArtsUnion series.

This is a wonderful opportunity to get involved with Union Square Main Streets and to get to know and give back to the Union Square community. All are needed and welcome!

If you’re interested in taking a leadership or planning role for the Festival, we’d love to have your help! Please just mention your interest in your email.

When:

* Saturday, September 25 (rain date Sunday, September 26) from 3-7pm
* Volunteer shifts run 2-3 hours long, beginning at 1:00 pm and ending at 8:30 pm
* There will be a pre-volunteer rally/party on Tuesday, September 21 at 7pm at the Design Annex, upstairs from Precinct. Attendance is encouraged but not mandatory to volunteer.

Volunteer positions:

* Run games for kids and adults alike
* Welcome guests and distribute programs
* Help backstage for musical and dancing performances
* Set-up, decorate and clean-up

You get a Fluff shirt when you volunteer, which is basically the world's greatest shirt. And a burrito, and lots of fluff of course! I hope you'll join me.

If you are interested, please e-mail fluff@unionsquaremain.org (i.e. not directly to me!) and include your fluff preferences if you have any. Thanks!

from an e-mail I just got:

This is Deputy Chief Paul Upton of the Somerville Police Department with an important public safety message for residents in the Spring Hill area.

Thursday evening, Somerville Police interviewed a woman who reported that she had been assaulted last Monday evening. She said that on September 6th about midnight, she was walking home from the Porter Square MBTA station when she was indecently assaulted. She reported that while walking in the vicinity of Summer Street and Belmont Street, she was approached by a male who was riding a red BMX type bicycle. This subject made an indecent remark to her and she quickly tried to walk away. She was then grabbed by the subject who pulled out what appeared to be a firearm. She was then knocked to the ground and assaulted. The victim was able to scream, causing him to cease his attack and flee the area on his bike.

She described the suspect as a Black male, Early 20's, wearing a White Kangol style golf cap, a striped shirt around his waist and jeans.

And this time I'm actually posting about it *before* the day of--go me!

Lesson is at 3:45pm and goes until the weekly blues dance begins (any time between 4:30 and 5pm). Lesson is free, jam is $3

This week, one of the best blues dance teachers in Boston, Amanda Gruhl, will teach with an aspiring (and inspiring) blues dancer, Jamie Triplett. Next week, Shawn Hershey (of the Fried Bananas) will teach with the inimitable Naomi Choodnofskiy. You don't want to miss this. Ok, maybe you do, but that might be because you don't know what you are missing. Seriously folks, blues dance is a blast. Come dance with us or just order food and watch until you feel inspired to join in, it's all good. Hope to see some of you out there Sunday.
