GWOB (unofficially "Geeks Without Borders"¹) is an international coalition of passionate problem solvers working together to assist people whose survival is threatened by lack of access to technology or communications due to violence, neglect, or catastrophe.
They're doing a tour of community workshops, hackerspaces, maker spaces, and co-working facilities in a dozen U.S. cities, soliciting feedback and participation as part of the run-up to their official launch, which will happen on October 10th.
A world-wide hack-a-thon will take place in the 24 hours before the launch party, with prizes announced at 10:10am on 10.10.10 (Pacific Time Zone).
Willow Brugh of Seattle's Jigsaw Renaissance will also be speaking about efforts to collaborate between various spaces in the hackerspace/co-working/maker space/public workshop movement on issues of common concern, including a "make a space" kit under development and an upcoming survey of North American spaces.
Admission is free, RSVP's appreciated but not required at gwobshow@mirror.to.
¹ There's some lack of clarity on trademark issues with the name "Geeks Without Borders", so that designation is currently unofficial.
