Artisan's Asylum is happy to announce that January class registrations are open. This month, we have a mixture of our usual introductory classes, some advanced classes that build on our introductory classes, and a number of project classes that will let you take home really cool stuff (including a working pneumatic engine, a kilt, custom wood sculpture, T-shirts printed with your own designs, or even an ocean kayak!).

In addition to the classes listed below, we also have Artisan's Asylum gift certificates that make for awesome presents. Registration for January membership is also now open, if you just want to come in and use the shop spaces for your own projects! We want you to join our group of over 50 members as we build a hub of technology, art and manufacturing in Somerville.

Without further ado, here are our January classes! details and such )

I run the Pets in Need silent auction each year, which took place this past November 12th at the Dilboy VFW. PIN is a nonprofit, no-kill animal rescue program based in Massachusetts and New Hampshire (www.petsinneedanimalrescue.org). We have several items that either did not have any bidders, were received after the event, or whose winners did not pick up. Most items have an expiration date, so I need to get rid of them before next year's auction.

I'm just going to sell them at approximately the price I think they should/would have gone for at the auction. Of course, if you'd like to pay more as a holiday donation, that's more than welcome! Please reply to this post if you want the items at the prices listed (first come first serve) and I'll send you a private message to arrange pickup/payment. Cash and check only.

Thank you for your support of this wonderful charity! Happy Holidays to all.

During last week's Public Safety Committee hearing a large amount of time was spend on the impact of bricks and brick pavers and people with disabilities.  Currently the disability commissions and groups from around the area are waging  a jihad against brick paved sidewalks and intend to block any future projects that plan to use them.  It was also revealed in the meeting that the city hired a designer to plan for the eventual redesign of Davis Square.

Since opposing folks with disabilities is an equivalent of political suicide , it is almost a given that when the redesign of the Davis Square happens, the brick-paved streets of Davis Square, as well as the heart of the Square itself, will be paved over or replaced by concrete or asphalt.

Do you think that Davis will loose much of it's charm when the red bricks are replaced by gray concrete?  Will the square still feel like an inviting place to hang out on a summer day?

Hi there!

I figured I would post here, since I know that there are humans here! Craigslist is very overwhelming, especially when looking for Somerville/Cambridge because that "Watermark" company spams the heck out of it.
Anyway, I am looking for an apartment for 3/1/11. Ideally, I would like to be in the Davis area.
Somewhere very, very T accessible, for sure. (as in, I can walk to a train station or something)
I do have limits, placed by the housing authority, and have included them to the best of my ability, in the ad that I posted to craigslist.
If anyone happens to know someone looking for a tenant, please send them my way?
Thank you very much.

Unbelievably funky, gnarly wine(?) rack that was clearly used for other purposes over the years. Has distinctive, crappy/cool joinery, and a simple oil finish, with plenty of spatter and glob on top of it.Read more... )
