Hi All,

I'd like to offer a discounted a self-defense class to those who are interested!  If you want to feel safer and more assertive, now is definitely the time to act.

I work for a really fantastic non-profit in Malden called IMPACT Boston.  IMPACT provides realistic personal safety training that gives students the skills to respond appropriately to threatening situations.  IMPACT classes are designed to teach self-protection strategies that are effective regardless of size, age, or fitness level.

You may have heard of IMPACT by its former name "Model Mugging."  It's unique in that it provides a rare opportunity to practice self-defense using full force (one of the instructors wears a protective suit.)  I would add that  this makes it additionally interesting for people who have studied martial arts or attended other, less involved, self-defense programs, like RAD.

Our next class, Women's Basics, takes place May 13th through 15th.  Some people had to move to our June class, leaving the May class a bit under-populated.  I really don't want the class to be canceled, especially for the sake of those already enrolled!

I'm hoping for three more registrants for May.  We offer scholarships and no-interest payment plans, plus I'm sure we'll be able to offer a further discounts (possibly comps!)  just to run the program.  The schedule is as follows:

Friday May 13th 4:30p-9:30p
Saturday May 14th 10a-7p
Sunday May 15th 11a-4p

If it sounds like a huge commitment, I should tell you that a 56 year old woman who took the class in 2005 called me a few weeks ago to tell me that she recently used IMPACT skills to successfully fight off a would-be armed robber.  Once the skills are in your body, they are yours forever.

I could go on and on, but if you're interested, please email me at registration@impactboston.org, call 781-321-3900, visit www.impactboston.org.... or we can talk in comments!

(We'll have more Women's classes, a Men's class, and hopefully an LGBTQ class coming up too.)

P.S.- Feel free to moderate my tags, I am not adept in teh tagging arts.

This event was inspired by Tom Waits' recent fundraising for homeless organizations, as well as the release of his first book of poetry—Hard Ground—which pairs his writing with poignant portraits of homelessness by Michael O'Brien.

In this spirit, all proceeds from the tribute will be donated to the Somerville Homeless Coalition. The mission of the Somerville Homeless Coalition is to provide homeless and near homeless individuals and families with individualized supportive services and tailored housing solutions with a goal of obtaining and maintaining affordable housing.

This is a bit disturbing:
A robbery was reported at Farmer’s Bounty on Elm Street on Friday, according to a police report.

The clerk told police an unknown man came into the store at about 12:17 p.m. on April 15, placed a six pack of beer on the counter, and then asked the clerk to give him all the cash, saying he had a gun in his pocket. No gun was actually shown but the clerk felt threatened and gave him some money.

During this, a woman entered the store as well. After the robbery, the suspect and woman walked away together. The man was described as a black man in his forties.
