Are residents responsible for damaged done by unsecured items?

I just suggested to my neighbor that they move the Big Wheels, tricycle, children's bicylcles chairs, plastic slide and being-disposed-of air conditioner from in front of their house (across the private way from me). They told me I was being ridiculous because Irene had been downgraded. Now, I'm just hoping I don't get to say "I told you so" but I'm wondering if they have any responsibility if any of these items go flying through my windows or into my tenant's car.

What's open and closed in Davis Square today

I took a walk through Davis Square just now so you don't have to. Here's what I found open and closed:

Open - Flatbread, Mr Crepe (closed at 1pm), Johnny D's, Diesel Cafe, Dunkin Donuts, Rosebud, Anna's Tacqueria, CVS, Tedeschi's, McKinnon's (was open, now closed), Farmers' Bounty, ETA, 1:30 pm: Diva, Burren, Redbones, Mike's, Cristo's, Chipotle, Sligo, Family Dollar, Downtown Wine, ETA 4:30 pm Foundry (at least for dinner), Posto (ditto)

Closed - Blue Shirt Cafe, Starbucks, McDonalds, Gargoyles (sign said "disco brunch cancelled"), Buffalo Exchange (had sign on door), Goodwill (ditto), ETA, 1:30 pm: Namaskar, Foundry

Foundry, Diva, Namaskar, Burren all looked closed but I don't know if they would normally be open at 10 am anyway

DPW FTW

I went down my street to do some cleaning of branches and piled up leaves out of the storm drains. Then, about 10 min later a DPW truck came through with a giant vacuum sucking out the drains. We saw the truck earlier on our morning ride. They seem to be looping around trying to keep things clear.

Color me impressed.

broken phone-tree message

to whoever is responsible for the City of Somerville phone tree today: the latest message about downed powerlines is looping the first 30 seconds or so of the message. i don't know how bad the loop is; i hung up after 3 repeats. it may be filling up people's voicemails even now.

i tried calling 311 to report it, and got some woman whose only response was "it's not my job to fix it". so much for last-minute call center replacements...

Laptop for sale: let's try this again

So I posted this before, and then LJ got DDoSed.  So...

IBM Thinkpad for sale, $50.  Model T34 (Academy ratio screen).  Windows XP currently loaded.  Battery is terrible, will need to be swapped out.  No audio currently working due to lack of drivers.  Comes with dock and external WiFi card since there's no internal one.

It's old, but it's rock solid.  The OS install is clean, as the drive was wiped and I reinstalled XP myself off a clean disk.  First come first serve, obviously.  :-)
