Hello, DS! We were introduced to this LJ community by a friend when my hubby and I were homeless and got 'evicted' from our sleeping spot next to Harvard Vanguard in Davis in September. I hope that it's not objectionable for me to post here, not actively being in Davis right now... 

I'm posting now because a lot of you have helped me and AJ in some way, whether you made a donation, gave us emotional support or did something in some other way that shows you care about our situation and well-being. (I also do not have any other way to get in touch with most of you.) We are still in an extremely scary and precarious situation right now and need all of the support we can get, so we are reaching out to ask for help. We're not asking you to make donations or buy things from us.

Recommendations for Home inspector and architect/designer?

Hi All,

I will search the archives/tags too, but i don't recall seeing anything go by recently. I find myself in the position of having placed an offer on a house and having it been accepted (yay! and scary!). Now I need to find an inspector. Any recommendations on someone who is thorough? What type of cost should I expect?

I also would like to contact an architect or designer about some remodeling work that will need to be done immediately after closing (if everything goes well, of course). I have no idea where to begin with finding someone who can help design a plan for knocking out several internal walls on the first floor. Any recommendations on people to contact? where to start? what to expect?

Thanks in advance, i'm a total newbie at this. Also, this is in North Cambridge, though I don't think that should effect recommendations...

surveyor?

Does anyone know of a local surveyor who can document the boundaries of a residential property?

The house next door is being upgraded and condo-ized, and they are going to put up a fence that I fear may go into my property or into the "right of way"beside my property. We're only talking about a couple of feet here, but in Somerville, every foot is precious.

I'd like to procure the information asap, before the fence is built.
Anyone know how much that sort of thing might cost?

Fire in Teele Square

There is a 3 alarm fire at Rainbow Carpet in Teele Square. Avoid the area tonight, it just came across the scanner that there is a partial roof collapse. Hope the firefighters and anyone who lives in the area are ok. Carpet + Fire + wind = bad night.
