Hi all,
I have an Earth Machine compost bin that I got from the City DPW about 2 years ago, and it has been working well until the past week or so when some animal decided to chew right through the side to get in, create a burrow, and presumably eat stuff. Don't know what changed, since we've had no problems previously and didn't put in anything unusual.

I guess that I'm posting this to let people know that these are not as rodent-proof as you might want for an urban environment, so keep an eye out. Has this happened to anyone else? Also, does anyone have any suggestions about other composters that are sturdier or something that I could put in the compost itself that rodents would find noxious enough to deter them? We've stopped putting new material in, but have to figure out what to do with the half composted mix that we have if we don't find a better bin.

It's that time of year again!  Brown School Community Discount Cards are now available at Mr. Crepe and Davis Squared, both located in Davis Square.  $10 will get you a year of discounts at local restaurants and shops. (Complete list under LJ-cut below)   We are happy to add several new vendors this year:  Brooklyn Boulders, iYo, Soundbites, The Biscuit and The Book Shop.

All of the money from the card sales goes to the Benjamin G. Brown School PTA.   The Brown School is a public K-6 school located at the corner of Willow & Kidder Ave.  Mr. Crepe and D-Squared are very generous to sell the cards for us.  They do not get any $$ from selling the cards.  Students from the school will also be selling the cards in mid-September.

Thank you for supporting the Brown School!

I'm looking for somebody to share an enormous apartment outside Davis Square, starting in September. People walk in the door and gasp at the size of the living room, the light, the hardwood floors. It's 20 minutes walk to Davis, with very convenient bus access to the Red, Orange, and Green lines. The apartment is a 2nd floor walkup in a converted Victorian, with free laundry in the basement.

Your private space would be a bedroom, plus another room to use as a study or craft space, and we'd share the big sunny living room, sunroom, eat-in kitchen, and bathroom. The common space is already furnished, but we can fit more stuff in here if we need to.

see how great it looks? Despite my photography skills? )

I'm a 45-year-old woman, a bookish introvert who spends a fair amount of time at home, not necessarily being sociable. I'm looking for a housemate who doesn't think sitting on the couch reading a book is code for "I'm lonely and would like to have a conversation." (I do like having conversations sometimes. Though I don’t want to be pushy. I like respecting boundaries.) I need to keep video and many perfumes out of common spaces. The apartment is and needs to remain smoke and alcohol free, pet free, queer-friendly, and poly-friendly.

The landlord wants to approve subletters and check credit. He doesn't want this to be a 3-person apartment, but I think he'd be ok with 2 adults and a baby. (And I'm certainly ok living with a housemate whose sweetheart sleeps over a lot!) Rent is $900, plus half the utilities. Please contact me at adrian.turtle.zoom@gmail.com if you're interested or have any questions. (Also, please pass this around to any friends who want a nice place to live.)
