Hi, there.

I thought some of you may be interested in a free lecture I'm giving this Thursday at the Armory cafe. It's funded in part by the Somerville Arts Council and Massachusetts Cultural Council.

It's also a meet-up so that creative Somervillians can network. Here is the flyer:

"The Muppets as a Model Creative Business"
How did Jim Henson turn his art into a successful business?

In this multimedia-based lecture, Boston University Lecturer Elizabeth Hyde Stevens will explain the dynamics between business, technology, and art, at Henson Associates in the 1950s, 60s, 70s, and 80s. If you’re an artist, innovator, or entrepreneur, Henson’s strategies may be worth a closer look. What can the Muppets teach us about business?

Come prepared to meet other creative Somervillians. Beverages available at counter.

There will be a public hearing before the Somerville Board of Alderman about divesting the City from fossil fuels on Thursday, March 13 at 6pm at Somerville City Hall.

More information is available here: http://www.facebook.com/events/657952727598309/ (sorry for the FB link; anybody have a better?)

If you can come speak in support of divestment, that would be great. But even if you can just be there to show your support by your presence, that means a lot too. A good turnout will show the Board that people in Somerville care about this issue.

My apologies, although I didn't notice a dedicated headline, I did see that a mention of this meeting was made in another thread. I'll delete this if ya'all find it repetitive.

There will be a community meeting on Bibim's desire to occupy the, now vacant, McDonald's space (243 Elm Street) in Davis Square. Bibim has received rave reviews for their Allston location and were included in the Boston Globe's list of the best food in 2013.

The meeting will be held in the Baptist Church (31 College Avenue) from 7:00-8:30pm and will feature samples of their cuisine. They will be before the Licensing Commission one week from tonight. The Somerville Patch has featured the meeting information on their website today.

I will be attending the meeting and don't mind posting a recap if you like.

Hi, Everyone. I found a place, so now am looking for someone to sublet my space with a roommate. Thanks!

I am looking for a friendly, responsible woman to take over my lease (ends August 31) to share a roomy duplex apartment in a beautiful triple decker near Tufts and Teele Square (a five-minute bus ride or 10 min walk from the Red Line T at Davis Square). This is a perfect apartment for someone who is looking for more room and privacy than the typical housemate situation since you'll have the entire second floor (one large bedroom and a smaller room) to yourself.

The apartment is on the first and second floors, with a front porch and back deck, good-sized living room with wood floors, and eat-in kitchen with pantry. The living room is simply furnished so room can easily be made for your furniture. The kitchen is fully stocked with pans, appliances, and other culinary gadgets. Free laundry and storage available in basement. Front and back porches. Small yard. Plenty of on-street parking with Somerville permit.

You get the large, sunny, second-floor bedroom, approximately 12 x 14 with two windows and a nice-sized closet. Your second room is a a smaller second-floor room (10 x 12+?). Your bedrooms are the last two pics. Rent for the two rooms is $800 a month. Utilities (gas for cooking/heat, electric, internet) and some household expenses (toilet paper, trash bags, cleaning supplies) are shared. Split two ways, the expenses tend to be around $65-$120 per month, but can go up to $150 per month during extremely cold weather.

First and last month's rent and references required.

Your Roommate:
queer woman in her mid-40s
non-smoker, very occasional social drinker
works at Harvard as administrator
amateur musician (fiddle and accordion, which she practices after noon and before 10 pm)
morning person
fairly sound sleeper (so night owls are welcome too!)
flexitarian (mostly cooks vegetarian food, but does eat meat)

She's looking for someone who is a queer-friendly woman, non-smoker, someone who is conscientious about participating in the chore rotation for common area cleaning, punctual with rent, etc. Sorry, pets are not allowed. Email with more information about yourself if you're interested in coming to see the the apartment. Thanks!

I took the opportunity to attend a community meeting in Ward 6 to learn about a new Korean restaurant, Bibim, looking to occupy the 243 Elm Street space in Davis Square. Also in attendance this evening, were the owners Young and Ed Kim, their attorney, architect, spokesperson, as well as, Alderman At Large Jack Connolly and Director of Economic Development Ed O'Donnell. Ward 6 Alderman Rebekah Gewirtz was said to be attending another meeting scheduled for the same time.

The restaurant is also hoping to obtain a full liquor license at next week's Licensing Commission meeting as it seems the Davis decision is dependent upon this approval. Rising rent prices are making the retrieval of alcohol licenses for eateries a necessity. They, currently, do not have a license at the Allston location.

Represented by former City Attorney John Gannon, mother and son owners Young and Ed Kim will be doing a complete renovation of the space to accommodate a seating capacity of 92. The owners do have plans to ask for additional outdoor seating in the future.

Architect, David Barsky, is planning on using rustic materials such as thick cut, bark-edged tabletops and cut stone as accents to bring a 'natural' feel to the dining room. To open the space to the outside, fold up windows are being considered for the storefront rather than the traditional open "door" style seen on other establishments. Columns will be used to buffer eating space from the front door and, overall, Barsky does not want to use many partitions making the restaurant open to staff for easier service to customers. Sculptures and paintings will also be used to decorate the restaurant as Young is also an artist, herself.

Although most attendees spoke in support of the restaurant, some seemed concerned about the owners' lack of experience with alcohol. Ed Kim reassured them with the news that he has just completed a bartending course and that he will staff the location with properly certified employees.

The next stop for the Kims and their team is before the Licensing Commission on March 17th at 6:00 PM for a hearing on whether they will be awarded the liquor license they need to open. The meeting will be held at the TAB building-167 Holland Street.
