We do need one or two more folk to help at the Spring Used Book Sale - this Thursday and Friday 12-4pm. Light work (tidying books mostly) - an hour or 2 would be fantastic. You get paid in books! Works for high-school service hours too. Email friendssomervillepubliclibrary@gmail.com for details.

May 15-18 the Friends of the Somerville Public Library Spring Book Sale is coming up. There is also talk that the bake sale may make a guest appearance on Saturday May 17th too. Again the book sale coincides with PorchFest (nice!) - and we will welcome local band Luddy Mussy to the library...

There’s plenty of wild adventure at the 5th Annual Ciclismo Classico Bike Travel Film Festival. The Festival, a benefit for Massbike, presents 11 short films featuring two-wheeled travels around the globe – and this year’s journeys are the most exotic yet. From lava-fields in Iceland to abandoned wilderness roads in Kyrgystan, 2014 takes viewers further than ever before.

However - for many bicycle lovers, sooner or later kids come into the picture. How do children fit in with the fancy-free life of a bicycle tourist? In two of this year’s featured films, we are introduced to the world of family bike travel.

One of these filmmakers, Charles R. Scott (the “Family Adventure Guy”), circumnavigated Iceland with his 10 year old son and 4 year old daughter. Charles will be present at the event for an informal Q&A during intermission – learn about making those family adventure dreams a reality!

This year’s Grand Jury Prize goes to a phenomenal film called The Road From Karakol. It’s just about the opposite to the family films in every way – here, Kyle Dempster sets out on a solo journey across Kyrgystan, heading so deep into the wilderness that the roads grind to a halt.

In addition to the films, a festive atmosphere is on tap at this most-anticipated Bike Month event. A social hour begins at 6 PM and features a Cookie Showcase highlighting the delicious offering of local bakeries. Also included is the “Great Jersey Giveaway” raffle, which will outfit winning guests with bike clothing for their next adventure. One lucky attendee will win a free Ciclismo Classico bicycle vacation valued at over $3,500.

Daddy Jones Bar is looking to expand their seating area by adding a patio to the back of the property which faces Broadway. The Magoun Square eatery will stand before the Zoning Board of Appeals on June 4th to request permission to add the space, but will be holding a community meeting on Monday May 19th at 6:00pm to hear concerns from abutters.

A member of Somerville Local First and participant in this year's Taste of Somerville, the establishment and it's owner Dimitra Tsouranis-Murphy have made a positive impact on the community while running the much talked-about restaurant located at 525 Medford Street.

A flier states, "Daddy Jones Bar is proposing to put an outdoor patio at the rear of their property on Broadway. The patio will only be open until 9:30 PM. Please join us to find out more about the project, see a proposed layout, and meet your neighbors. Meet the owner, Dimitra Murphy, and voice any concerns and ask any questions you may have! Light snacks + refreshments will be provided."

Set to be in attendance is the owner of Daddy Jones Bar Dimitra Tsouranis-Murphy, Ward 5 Alderman Mark Niedergang and surrounding business owners.

My good towels have been moved to my "working" towels, so now I need to get rid of the old working towels. Near Engine 7 on Highland Ave., two grocery bags full of kinda worn, kinda dingy towels (white, 100 % cotton) which are good for the shop, washing cars, muddy dogs, fiber artists, or braiding into a rope to escape a prison tower. If you're a great repairer/launderer, you might be able to turn them back into decent towels. Or if you're a poor college student and don't mind frayed, dingy towels.
