You also, elsewhere in your site (the "Noah" tab) state:

"Noah is proud to call the South End (Boston) home for five years now"

Last I looked, the South End of Boston is nowhere near Davis Square, and your web site has no mention of Davis Square, Somerville, or Medford in it.

This entire posting is an Advertisement for your services. Please don't pontificate the bee population with me, because if you were a regular Davis Square livejournal reader, you'd know that I currently have a hive in my yard.

But obviously, you don't know anything about the group you posted to, or you'd realize that this entire posting is a flat out advertisement for overpriced beekeeping services, and is a pure moneymaking opportunity for you to fund your research and pocketbook. It is totally inappropriately posted here, and I ask you again to delete this entire discussion.

My personal feeling is that this subject is of sufficient interest to Davis Square readers that the post should stay up. I don't consider two posts in 7 weeks to be spam.

Hi Karyn and readers,

Thank you for expressing your opinion. The tone of your writing clearly expresses your vitriol.

We are both beekeepers. We obviously care about improving honey bee populations, and so honey bee health is of vital importance.

I think this is good opportunity for me to describe more about what Best Bees is. As a matter of fact, Best Bees Company is nonprofit. Even though people who found and run nonprofits are allowed to take a salary, I have never taken a penny's pay. Everything I do is to generate money for research. My time and my resources are donated.

You are correct that I live in the South End of Boston. I have communted to Davis Square for work and school since 2005. I love it there! Why else would I continue to spend the far majority of my waking hours there?

I am proudly finishing up my Ph.D. in biology in the Davis Square area this August. My research funds will run out at that time. Unfortunately, our stellar honey bee research lab has never received a grant! And it's not for lack of trying, that's for sure. I hope that Best Bees Company will fund my research on honey bee health after I graduate - research that can truly change the world.

Specifically, in 2008, I won a $10,000 prize from The Dow Chemical Company for the develop of broad-spectrum, subunit vaccines for honey bees. I filed a patent and started a nonprofit. Please read my blog (www.bestbees.com/blog) for my stories about applying for research grants. Grants are tough to get! All I can do is keep on applying and never give up.

I can only hope that after reading this, you will be convinced that Best Bees Company is a very good thing that deserves a voice in Davis Square.

I'm a regular DSLJ reader, and I had no idea you already had a hive.

Since people here are generally interested in things like CSAs, farmers markets, and other locally-based urban agriculture services - and since the bee people posted recently - I'm quite happy to see an update from them. Even though I'm not going to be getting any bees myself. I would never have learned they even existed if not for the original post. In my opinion, this is one of the least annoying ads I've seen posted here.

I'm "koshmom" not koshmon. While I haven't kept the hive secret, I also know I never made an initial posting about it. It belongs to another person, I am merely hosting it at my place, happily reaping the benefits of the pollination (and the ouch-ness of stepping on a bee the other day). However, I thought I had mentioned it in a followup post in this group. I have written a few followup posts in various places mentioning the hive. I looked back over a month or two of postings here, and I can't find any.

Thus I'd like to apologize to noah about my tone. I was wrong to be so forceful with my comeback. While I still believe that the original post could have been written in a way that was more Davis centric with less of an advertising bent, I shouldn't have come down so hard.

For the record, it's perfectly okay for businesses to advertise themselves on DSLJ and it happens all the time. We encourage it, even, because we like when business owners are directly involved in the community. Yes, it should be limited, but two posts over the course of the season is okay. If he was posted ads regularly, that'd be a different story.

But on the other side, if someone posts and you want people to know they can do the same for a lot less money, it's also okay to reply politely to let folks know about other opportunities.
