Date: 2010-05-26 11:19 pm (UTC)Thank you for sharing your opinion. Posting somewhat disapproving feedback is not always the easiest decision to make, and I appreciate reading your comments.
Best Bees Company is rooted in the Davis Square area. I have been working with honey bees in Medford (a 15 minute walk from Davis) since 2006. I have taught courses to college students in Medford, where students study live honey bee hives through plexiglass to gain insight into animal behavior. Moreover, the majority of Best Bees clients are in Medford and within walking distance from Davis Square.
As you have probably heard in the news, Karyn, honey bees populations are steadly declining. We still do not know why. I have published multiple papers on honey bee health and immune function - all from work done in a lab right up the street from Davis Square. I started this company with the objective to raise research funds to put towards improving honey bee health. Through this posting, Davis Square residents have an opportunity to join this important cause and prevent pollinator decline.
Improving honey bee populations is something of benefit to everyone. Residents of the Davis Square area are generally concerned about the environment and seem to appreciate hearing about new green businesses and initiatives in their community. I hope that with this writing, you, too, are now convinced that Best Bees Company is a great match for people reading Davis Square Live Journal, and perhaps even something you might consider participating in to help improve our local ecology.
Best regards,
Noah

Date: 2010-05-27 12:36 am (UTC)"Boston’s Best Bees™ is based in the South End of Boston, MA. As such, we specialize in installing honey bee hives in densely populated, urban areas. We also offer our services to the Greater Boston area and Cape Cod."
You also, elsewhere in your site (the "Noah" tab) state:
"Noah is proud to call the South End (Boston) home for five years now"
Last I looked, the South End of Boston is nowhere near Davis Square, and your web site has no mention of Davis Square, Somerville, or Medford in it.
This entire posting is an Advertisement for your services. Please don't pontificate the bee population with me, because if you were a regular Davis Square livejournal reader, you'd know that I currently have a hive in my yard.
But obviously, you don't know anything about the group you posted to, or you'd realize that this entire posting is a flat out advertisement for overpriced beekeeping services, and is a pure moneymaking opportunity for you to fund your research and pocketbook. It is totally inappropriately posted here, and I ask you again to delete this entire discussion.
Thank you.

Date: 2010-05-27 03:46 am (UTC)Thank you for expressing your opinion. The tone of your writing clearly expresses your vitriol.
We are both beekeepers. We obviously care about improving honey bee populations, and so honey bee health is of vital importance.
I think this is good opportunity for me to describe more about what Best Bees is. As a matter of fact, Best Bees Company is nonprofit. Even though people who found and run nonprofits are allowed to take a salary, I have never taken a penny's pay. Everything I do is to generate money for research. My time and my resources are donated.
You are correct that I live in the South End of Boston. I have communted to Davis Square for work and school since 2005. I love it there! Why else would I continue to spend the far majority of my waking hours there?
I am proudly finishing up my Ph.D. in biology in the Davis Square area this August. My research funds will run out at that time. Unfortunately, our stellar honey bee research lab has never received a grant! And it's not for lack of trying, that's for sure. I hope that Best Bees Company will fund my research on honey bee health after I graduate - research that can truly change the world.
Specifically, in 2008, I won a $10,000 prize from The Dow Chemical Company for the develop of broad-spectrum, subunit vaccines for honey bees. I filed a patent and started a nonprofit. Please read my blog (www.bestbees.com/blog) for my stories about applying for research grants. Grants are tough to get! All I can do is keep on applying and never give up.
I can only hope that after reading this, you will be convinced that Best Bees Company is a very good thing that deserves a voice in Davis Square.
Best regards,
Noah

Re: Primarily rooted in the Davis Square area
Date: 2010-05-27 11:09 am (UTC)Since people here are generally interested in things like CSAs, farmers markets, and other locally-based urban agriculture services - and since the bee people posted recently - I'm quite happy to see an update from them. Even though I'm not going to be getting any bees myself. I would never have learned they even existed if not for the original post. In my opinion, this is one of the least annoying ads I've seen posted here.

Date: 2010-05-27 06:43 pm (UTC)Thus I'd like to apologize to noah about my tone. I was wrong to be so forceful with my comeback. While I still believe that the original post could have been written in a way that was more Davis centric with less of an advertising bent, I shouldn't have come down so hard.

Date: 2010-06-01 06:03 pm (UTC)I think your writing style and tone are too professional/commercial in nature for this setting -- the *mismatch* gives it a spammy feel to it. I'd recommend looking at how other local businesses represent themselves in this and similar communities.

Date: 2010-05-27 08:34 pm (UTC)This sounds so cool! Sorry about the vitriol -- some posters (like me!) like to hear about alternative/local services available.
I can't afford bees right now, but my upstairs neighbor and I are considering it in the future. We have lots a kids running through our yard though, would that be a conflict of organisms?
