Today's Globe g section has a long feature article about online restaurant-review sites. It includes a full-page photo of Grover Taylor, the owner of Eat at Jumbo's in Ball Square. He's suing Yelp:
Grover Taylor, owner of Eat at Jumbo’s in Somerville, says his ratings dropped sharply last year when he declined to advertise on the site. “They called every week, telling me I needed to pay $500 a month to advertise. When I said no, a lot of one-star reviews started appearing on top. And then the phone would ring. Hi, this is Art from Yelp. We can make them disappear.’’ Taylor says the calls slowed and changed tone when he told the Yelp agent he was joining the class action suit. “Art stopped calling. A new guy from Yelp is calling now.’’

The Urban Gourmet sign is still in the little parking lot right behind it, bearing its shining, false promise. Man, I miss their Cuban sandwiches.

You know that back when they sold it, the UG people moved to Somerville Ave as City Slicker Cafe (http://www.cityslickercafe.com)?

Cuban sandwich is still on the menu, and they deliver.

I had heard!

It is just extra-sad for me because I live around the corner, so I see that forlorn sign all the time. Also because the day we moved in, Urban Gourmet is where we (not having a functioning kitchen yet) ate dinner, and I had the Cuban, and not twelve hours later they burned down.

Just so you know, that was well after the heyday of Urban Gourmet. They sold the place about 6-8 months before it burned down and it went way way downhill in that time. It was one of our favorites and we were very sad until City Slicker opened up and then we were not so sad anymore, but still a little bit.
