Can anybody recommend an interior designer or architect who takes smallish residential projects? We eventually want to make some significant changes to our house such as adding a second bathroom.

We're unlikely to do all the work at once but we would like to make sure that the smaller projects we do are in line with a longer-term plan. So we'd like somebody who is willing to work with us on that basis.

Any recommendations, anti-recommendations, or experiences you're willing to share are appreciated!

I can give an anti-recommendation: don't hire my ex-boss, Frank Shirley of Cambridge. His work is lovely, but he's pushy and rude. He also likes to screw over his interns by asking them to work from home without pay, does not give overtime, and decided to fire me after I was forced to call out sick for a week with pneumonia.

Actually, I'm now working as a textbook editor. The pay is good, the hours are reasonable, and my attention to detail is a bonus. :)

I can recommend David King. He helped us lay out our basement and kitchen remodels, even thought we were at least two years away from doing the work. We planned on doing the work in two stages, and David was quite willing to draw up the staged construction drawings and make sure that everything lined up for the various stages.

He wasn't cheap, but neither was he outrageously expensive.

We're going to go back to him for planning our second floor expansion

He's on Broadway down by the Arlington line. If you like his aesthetic, he's great at design and at working with clients. Less good at the construction management piece, but it all turns out well in the end.

We have had great results with Dominic Daveta 617 666 9840 local and knowledgeable. He knows the in and outs of the building department also, since that can be an issue in some situations.
It does sound like you don't need a certified architect though by your description, more of an interior designer.

David Nauss runs a design/build firm in Waltham. I did a medium sized renovation with him over the past couple of years in a few stages & I did some of the work myself. He's the architect and has a couple of staff carpenters and project managers. They sub out the rest, but have worked with the same group of subs for a long time. I was very happy with the work and everyone was very friendly and easy to work with.
