So surely there must be a decent auto body place or two in this town where owning a car is a horrible handicap. My car has some minor parking lot incident bruising that I'd like to get taken care of since I want to keep it in re-sellable condition. Just some light denting and some scraped paint. I have a Subaru if that makes a difference in this kind of thing. I just don't want to go to some place that's going to charge me 800 dollars to take 2 seconds to pop a dent with a magnet.

I'd like to support a local business although I'm willing to go to one of the surrounding burbs if all the shops around here are going to gouge me. Any recs?

Hooray for Subarus!

What kind of Subaru do you drive? I recommend you join the www.nasioc.com forums. We're very friendly and would be helpful in all things Subaru.

That said:
Original Auto Body on Joy Street in Somerville is super sketchy looking, but they do great work.
Arlington Center Auto Body on Swan Street is who Cityside uses. Very competent at the work. A tad overpriced, but hey, it's basically a dealer shop.

If you need any mechanical work done, I'd highly recommend Vinnie at Vinnie's Autosport. He knows Subarus like the back of his hand. Just tell him Ian sent you.

Forgot there's no edit button...

These guys also do ridiculously good work at a great price:

A bunch of my Subie friends have used them on their show cars and they come out with matching paint like new.

I went to Dick's Auto Body http://dicksautobody.com/ needing a new side mirror and repair of a very long, very deep scratch (thanks garbage collector!). They did great work and got more money out of my insurance company than was originally offered. Judging by the otherwise high-end cars in the lot, they are probably pricey, so it may not be the best place for you if it's coming out of your pocket. But they were friendly, helpful, and as I said, they did an awesome job for me. I did have to wait about a week to get an appointment, though.

Mirak Auto in Arlington basically rebuilt my car after an accident. I just got it back on Friday and it looks great.

First of all, don't let the superhippies get to you. There's no shame in being able to get places in a convenient fashion.

Second, go to Foreign/Domestic Auto, at 364 Boston Ave, Medford. Koko is the best, it's pretty cheap and low-pressure, and it's on several bus routes too which is nice.

Shame on me, I didn't read you were looking for body work, Foreign Domestic doesn't do that.

I did get some work done at Dick's, but it was a major repair after getting rear ended, so it was on insurance. My understanding is they aren't the cheapest.

I had all my auto body work done at B & R Auto Center on Mill St. in Arlington, and they did a great job each time.

I have used DeLeo's auto body twice, the service was very good. They were recommended on the Car Talk website.

I've had a good experience with Teele Sq. Auto at 1284 Broadway between Teele Sq. and Alewife Brook Parkway.

If you can wait until school starts, Somerville High School has an auto body shop. They did a great job on my husband's car, and I think they charged him parts + pizza.

Where did you end up going? And were they good and affordable? I'm in the same situation now.
