Lyndell's

As long as we are on the subject of Lyndell's ... I finally got around to using my $30 certificate which I got from LivingSocial (IIRC) for $15 for some cookies this last weekend at the Broadway location.  I was LESS than impressed.   I've had tastier and much cheaper cookies (even considering the 50% off)  from Star Market and Costco and much better (and probably cheaper cookies too) from Antoine's in Newton.   Does Lyndell's bake their cookies in the North End and then shipped them by way of China or something?   Is all of Lyndell's like this or did I just pick the wrong thing?

I never got cookies from Lyndell's, but their cakes and cupcakes were awesome.

Agreed. I don't think I've ever tried the cookies, but I LOVE the cakes/cupcakes. Much, much better than any of the "specialty" cupcake shops like Kick-Ass and Sweet, and I'll go far out of my way to get Lyndell's cupcakes for parties.

Count me into the "not impressed with Lyndell's" camp.

I've had their cakes once... I was also not impressed.

Um, you crazy. I've had their cakes, cupcakes, and black and white cookies (aka half-moons), and all were ridiculously awesome.

What kinds of cookies did you get? Come to think of it, I've never actually gotten cookies from Lyndell's (their B&W cookies are def mote like little cakes).

i work nearby and we have their stuff quite a bit. i think it's all ok, but nothing to make me think it's worth a price premium. i'm not a huge fan of this sort of thing (cakes/cookies/etc.) so I don't really count :)

Well, as they say, to each his own. I'm usually not a dessert person, myself. Give me cheese anytime!

I've only ever had the black and white "cookies", and they are fantastic.

there is a chance I will kill for their meringues. I've never been challenged to this yet, but I may well try.

I've not had their cookies, but I think their breads, cakes, and cupcakes are decent, definitely worth the price at least. They make a fine date loaf, and their wheat bread toasts up really well.

I ordered a whipped cream cake from them (my favorite kind), and it was pretty good, though not as good as Patsy's whipped cream cakes on Broadway close to where it intersects McGrath's. I've also tried their almond macaroons and OMG good. Seriously. Wow.

I've never had any other black and white for so cheap and they're the best black and whites I've ever had. I think it's also pretty subjective whether it's "good" or not. I'm big on a specific type of frosting which Lyndell's does on their cakes and cupcakes. I don't mind that it's sugary or rich, whereas I've had other people tell me that they think it's disgusting because it's just too sweet.

Also, I did have their cookies once at the North End location and wished I'd just ordered another cupcake since they were kind of boring.

I don't know what kind of cookie you had, but I love their shortbread cookies with fruit filling. They are super tasty!

I wouldn't pay money for the pink/green/yellow sprinkle cookies (which they occasionally hand one of to my daughter), but the black and whites (which are not black and white cookies at ALL - that is a different item and not one they sell! these are effecctively cupcakes!), the cannolis and the cakes are delicious. The cupcakes strike me as supermarket-type cupcakes for a reasonable price, that I can buy from a local independent store instead of a supermarket or a costco and I'm pretty happy with that too.

I doubt they bake anything in the North End and ship it to the Somerville store, though, honestly - they've had the Somerville store for decades and decades and are fully equipped to bake stuff onsite.

Having been to the North End location several times, I have it on authority of the staff there that the goodies are baked in Somerville, as that location is simply way too small to do any of that there.

Amen! Those aren't black and whites! I'm sure they're good, but they're NOT black and whites.

HALF MOON!!!

I'm just gonna say...

IT'S A HALF-MOON! A BLACK AND WHITE COOKIE IS SOMETHING ELSE!!!!

(Trivia: It's also one of Obama's favorites from when he lived in Somerville. He had a bunch of them shipped down to DC for the inauguration.)

No, there are some places you can get New York style black-and-whites. I will have to think about where those are and get back to you--stupid wheat allergy means I can't eat them any more.

See, I'm actually more used to calling them half-moons. But then a lot of people I know aren't from the area and started referring to them as black and whites instead so I just assumed I was using some weird outdated term passed down to me by my parents. Good to know that other people still call them half moons.

Half moons and black-and-whites are not the same.

Half moons are a cupcakey base with chocolate and white frosting, usually buttercream.

Black-and-whites are a cookie base with chocolate and white ganache.

The chocolate frosting on their doughnuts and eclairs is the best I've ever had.

My absolute favorite thing there is the almond clusters and almond discs. I don't much care for their cupcakes, but my SO loves 'em. TEHO.

Lyndell's has bad (headache inducing) cookies. They're cakes and cup cakes are awesome though.
