Hello, this is Jackie Rossetti from the City of Somerville with snow emergency information for Thursday, January 27th. The City will lift its snow emergency regulations effective at 6:00 p.m. this evening. Residents who had parked in municipal or school lots during the snow emergency MUST move their cars by 8:00 p.m. Cars still parked in city lots at that time may be subject to ticketing and towing, and this rule WILL be strictly enforced in order to allow crews to effectively plow all lots.

For public safety reasons, please be cautious when parking on City streets, and be sure to allow access for cars and public safety vehicles. Cars impeding access, particularly for public safety vehicles, may be towed. Residents are also reminded that furniture, barrels, or other items left in parking spots will be treated as trash and disposed of, and sidewalks and walkways must be shoveled, or property owners may be subject to fines. Thank you for your assistance in keeping our community safe.

That was Tom Champion, our former City Communication Director, or whatever his title was.

If I can't have my spot, NO ONE can have my spot! BWA HAH AHA HAH!!!! er...

I like the idea of the person who wanted to save their spot with barrel of used motor oil, or something... You want to dispose of this? Great!

NOTE: I do not actually like the idea of anyone saving a spot, I just thought it was amusing.

Wouldn't it be funny if the barrel developed a small "leak" near it's base, so that there's an obvious icicle of water causing it to freeze to the road.....

Oh, FFS. When I walk around, I clear saved spots, though I probably wouldn't move something that heavy. I may be causing all sorts of chaos, but I don't care. I emailed my alderman in December to find out how the City plans to deal with the issue, but I never received a reply. Just followed up.

I'm 7+ months pregnant, I park on the street, and I still don't understand what is broken about people who think a spot belongs to them just because they managed to grab it before it snowed. WTF.

god, exactly. they've already reaped the reward: a parking spot during the snowstorm. why they feel entitled to ongoing benefits based on that one stroke of luck is something i just do not get.

The only value to the saved space system is when people actually put a little "pride in ownership" into the space. With the even side of the street getting closer and closer to the odd, I would hope that the space savers at least dig a bit into that wall of snow to carve out a legal spot. Otherwise, there's no incentive for one night parkers to do much work, unless they think they will be ticketed or towed for being too close to the other side.

I *still* don't understand the rules for metered lots. People here have said these warnings to get your car out of municipal lots only apply to lots where you can't normally park (school, etc), but the city announcements never specify this. And if they need the lots to be empty so they can plow them, wouldn't that affect metered lots as well?
