One Davis Square was once Parke Snow department store, long ago, but I didn't know it ever had another department store in it. By the time I got here in 1984, One Davis Square was just offices (and no longer had much glass on the facade).
Where the Citizens Bank is now, was a Chinese restaurant then. Ming Toy, I think? And what's now Goodwill was Cummings, another department store (or was it a shoe store?). The Gorin Building had Almy's, a small local chain store.
There's still a 'Highland Shoes' sign in the pavement in front of what's now Cameras Inc.
Hmm... Park Snow, yes you're right about that one. That's the store I remember with the wonderful wooden staircase to the floor below.
And, I'm sure your right about everything else. My god, you're bringing back memories.
I moved to Davis in 1967 (age 7), so I remember bits and pieces. And in the 80's THE MALLS were the places to be! I wouldn't be caught dead in Davis Square!
Good grief. My BFF and I used to go to Brighams every Sunday, and order a SUNDAE; this huge bowl of ice cream in what was shaped like a giant brandy snifter, with hot fudge, an whip cream, cherry, etc., all for 50 cents. FIFTY CENTS.
That was cool, but the shoppe itself was pretty skeazy (ok, not a word...). Eww...
