I haven't heard of any plans to tear it down. Have you?
Before Social Security moved in, it was a small department store which I remember as 'Marks' but other older folks remember as 'Sparks' -- I'm not sure who's correct.
Oh, SPARKS! No, Sparks was at ONE DAVIS SQ, where the BSC is now. Of course, the building was different; they tore that one down and put up a parking lot. It was a really cool building though, I remember it. It had a "downstairs" and everything!
I believe Woolworth's was at the now SS building. Many, many moons ago.
And further down, where the Bank is now, there was another store, whose name escapes me, but it caught on fire and they had to destroy it.
Accross the street from the now Starbucks was GRANTS, another dept store.
ANd on the same side of Starbucks, on the corner accross from the now Dunk Donuts, was Thom Mcann, who IIRC sold the first Earth shoes (http://www.dressthatman.com/cgi-bin/shopper.cgi?preadd=action&key=ACCE128), for both men and women.
Davis was once a shopping Mecca. Who would have thunk?
One Davis Square was once Parke Snow department store, long ago, but I didn't know it ever had another department store in it. By the time I got here in 1984, One Davis Square was just offices (and no longer had much glass on the facade).
Where the Citizens Bank is now, was a Chinese restaurant then. Ming Toy, I think? And what's now Goodwill was Cummings, another department store (or was it a shoe store?). The Gorin Building had Almy's, a small local chain store.
There's still a 'Highland Shoes' sign in the pavement in front of what's now Cameras Inc.
Hmm... Park Snow, yes you're right about that one. That's the store I remember with the wonderful wooden staircase to the floor below.
And, I'm sure your right about everything else. My god, you're bringing back memories.
I moved to Davis in 1967 (age 7), so I remember bits and pieces. And in the 80's THE MALLS were the places to be! I wouldn't be caught dead in Davis Square!
Ok, there's been enough snark here... But the original poster never mentioned where the rumor started... No one else here seems to have heard that the building is being knocked down. Do you have any references to give?
Seconded. Would the OP please tell us where s/he heard that the building will be 'replaced' ? There are plenty of other offices and businesses in there, and I'd hate to think of them all being tossed out.
I really think people are being entirely too literal in their interpretation of the original question. I think the OP meant to ask what would be replacing the Social Security Office. I read it as such and am curious, too.
Yes, I'm not sure what happened. I heard that rumor back in the summer. Makes sense (other than the anti-gay part), it is the same demographic as Buffalo Exchange.
Urban Outfitters opened in Allston last year so it seems like they are looking into different areas.
You People would bitch and moan about it not being local though.
Not me -- men's clothing and shoes are a huge unmet need in the Davis-Porter neighborhood. I used to occasionally shop at the Porter Square Gap before it disappeared.
ssi building used to be Marks and before that it was called Sparks and it sold fire sale items. a lot of their stuff smelled a little smokey. The 'S' either fell off the front of the building or was removed and it became 'Marks". but before that I think it was 'Cummings'... a woman's clothing store that i used to shop at when i was in junior high school because they had petite sizes in dresses.
my most memorable places in Davis Sq were: Frascati's ... where we hung out in the booths for hours and after hours too. The Waldorf (MIke's now) Cummings (local women's clothing chain) Brighams (ice cream) woolworths ( ice cream and hamburgers and 5 and 10) Gorins Pasiks Park Snow The smoke shop....the only one left in the sqaure from those days. The Woodbridge Inn and The Blarney Stone The Pine Tree Diner
I recall Cummings being where Goodwill is now, but they might have moved there from here.
Do you recall where each of these businesses were located? The ones I think I know:
Brigham's - now Starbucks, was Papa Gino's in between Gorin - now Foundry and empty storefront next door (temporarily in use by Actors' Shakespeare Project). Was Almy's department store for a while in the 1980s Parke Snow - was in old One Davis Square building, demolished for new CVS/Boston Sports Club building Woodbridge Inn - hotel burned down, Ciampa Manor is there now (was Blarney Stone in this hotel?) Pine Tree Diner - demolished (or maybe moved elsewhere?) for Holland Street Red Line station
but I don't know where Frascati's, Pasik's, or the original Woolworth were. I recall a 'Woolworth Express' on the north side of Elm Street in the 1980s but it didn't last very long.

Date: 2011-02-17 02:09 pm (UTC)I remember hearing that the Social Security building was going to be relocated, but I don't know where.
If you look at the loopnet.com listing you can see how they made one of the drawings look like it had Urban Outfitters type banners outside.
