I have a gift Card to New Egg (www.newegg.com) for $999.99, and am looking for someone who may be interested in buying it from me for a reasonable price.
No visible posts in own journal, no friends, only in this community. However, they have made 20 comments over the 3 years the journal has been around. It's a toss-up.
He has posted to davis_square in the past (here and here), so I don't think the first two comments here are valid or appropriate. The buyer should be sure to check the balance before giving the seller any money.
My name is Alan, I live on Francesca Ave, just outside of Davis Square. Been living there since '98. The dog is Klaus, we walk around the square all the time. I have been reading this blog for a very long time and I enjoy all of the news and insights I get to the DS community. I have never made it to a meetup because I am usually busy being a Dad to a 5 year old girls so I do not get out much. I hope sometime to have a chance to join Ron on a bike tour.
I do not post much on this blog, I usually just prefer to read. Actually this whole thread is kind of indicative of why I do not post, I often find the discourse devolves so quickly to snark that it bums me out.
Wow, I am blown away by your snarky response to my post. Perhaps I should have worded my post differently? Is this an inappropriate use of this community forum? If so I apologize.
Actually I purposefully posted here because it is a community site. I live in the community, just outside of the square, and I would be happy to work with anyone interested in buying it to guarantee that it is legit.
I thought, (perhaps naively) that if someone was planning a big purchase in the immediate future they might appreciate realizing a $100 or so discount. I do not plan any upcoming purchases so it would be helpful to me to have the cash.
I do apologize if this is not a scam, but in this day and age, it did (and still does, to me) seem very phishy. the amount, as noted, is very large and somewhat unusual. Please accept my apology if I over-reacted.
We've always allowed local people to sell things here. I see no reason for the snark. It seems reasonable to me for the seller to take a loss in reselling if he is never going to buy anything from that merchant before the card expires.
No different than if I bought a Red Sox ticket for $100, realized I couldn't use it, and unloaded it here for $90.
I think this is just a matter of a too sparse post, it does sound like it could be a scam.
--to the OP: it might be helpful to just add that you are local (and will make the exchange locally) and are willing to let the buyer verify the amount before the exchange.
Another option: I believe gift cards are commonly sold on eBay and craigslist, and just asking for $900 does not seem unreasonable.
I thought I would start local so I could easily meet with a potential buyer. My wife just bought a groupon to Sunapee from a post on this site and it worked out well. I thought ebay and /or CL would really be hard to establish trust.
It is what it is. I bought a cintiq wacom pad for work and it turned out to be too big for my purposes. I thought they would be cool and take a return for a refund (less a reasonable restocking fee) but the best I could get was the gift card. The amount happened to be $999.99.
I wonder if you might find it easier to sell if you had it split into several smaller gift cards. I had no trouble selling some unused gift cards here myself, anyway. (And bought another.) But they were all much smaller and thus less scary in terms of piles of cash.
I'm sorry you inspired such a knee-jerk reaction. I think people are particularly sensitive right now with the recent drama.
with amazon you just load gift cards as a credit to your account and can use it to buy more gift cards (and with free shipping, someone who hates amazon could probably end up costing them a lot in processing and shipping fees)
If you still have it in mid/late May I could do $800 (I'm closing on a house so I can't monkey with my accounts until then). Assuming I can confirm the amount, etc. :)
That's all I'll have in "fun" money once the deal is done. Regardless, good luck!
