A lot of places (with physical locations, at least) refuse to do that, as it's considered a loss prevention issue.

with amazon you just load gift cards as a credit to your account and can use it to buy more gift cards (and with free shipping, someone who hates amazon could probably end up costing them a lot in processing and shipping fees)
