Bill Griffith (the cartoonist) has been on a years-long kick of having his principal characters wander through visually interesting American landmarks, I think mostly just because he likes to draw them. Another recent strip featured the Harvard Lampoon's "Castle" (http://www.harvardlampoon.com/history/castle.htm) in Harvard Square -- I actually didn't know what that building was until I saw it in the strip!
He used to live in SF and would draw things there, too...that's where that doggie head is.
I would never have found out or known what the Big Duck (http://www.roadsideamerica.com/attract/NYFLAduck.html) was if it weren't for Zippy; I was on Long Island once and we drove past it and I was all, HEY! It's the BIG DUCK!
