Any recommendations for reasonable places to view the sky, northward and close to the horizon? Supposedly the aurora will be visible as far south as D.C. tonight...
Halibut point is a wonderful spot if you have a car... its closed at night but the ranger there routinely allows amateur astronomers to hang out in the evening if there is an event like a meteor shower. Just be quiet and courteous of the neighboring homes.
FYI: the current aurorae map doesn't show activity below Canada:
Sadly, I think it'll take an extremely major event to get an aurora sighting here in the summer.
That said, Gloucester has a couple of north facing beaches, and this is where we go when there's supposed to be activity or meteors. If you want to catch a ride up with us next time there's something to see, just send me a PM. You can address it to "Creepy internet stranger!"
The huge ejecta on June 7th was supposed to be visible tonight this far south, and as far south (as I noted) in D.C. last night. Tomorrow is, alas, much further north and not worth seeking...
Have been running full tilt, so haven't had a chance to see if it was actually so for last night, but if it was... I will try going out tonight.
