i'm looking for an apartment and have seen some listings where heat is included in the rent but it's oil heat, while the oven/stove is gas. (and not included.) my current place has gas heat and i have no idea how to budget for oil. do any of you have oil heat and a gas stove, and if so, what's your gas bill like?

is this something i should be wary of as a renter, or does it not make any difference how my prospective apartment is heated? (i've lived with forced-steam radiators since i moved to camberville fourteen years ago.)

A lot of your heating budget is going to depend on how efficient (or not) the furnace is, how well the house is insulated including your windows and doors, and whether you're on the ground floor or an upper one.

If you're using gas for cooking only (how do you get your hot water?), you're probably looking at less than $50/month.

I have oil heat and a gas stove. My typical monthly gas bill is between $10-15.

I have oil heat and a gas stove. Our gas bills run from $11-17 depending on how much we cook. Hot water in our place is also from the oil tank.

What they said.

I also have oil heat and gas stove and gas clothes dryer. The gas bill is around $15/mo. More if I'm cooking a lot. Also, my stove has a pilot light, so a newer stove might have a cheaper gas bill.

What's the hot water?

Oh, and I would assume that your monthly costs for the scenario you describe would just be like your summer costs for gas at your current place, no?

My gas boiler (for heat, not hot water) keeps its water around 100 degrees when the heat is off. Until I figured this out and started shutting off its gas supply in the summer, my summer gas bill was around $25. Then it dropped to about $12.

My gas bill is about $11/month, as this is just for the stove and nothing else.

We've had the household gas bill go from $40 in the summer to $400 in the winter. It all depends on your insulation. :-/
