There's a new "real" bookstore in Porter Square...creatively named Porter Square Books. Between them and McIntyre, I don't think there's room for another one...
so this is what i heard from dave's pasta dude: owner of mr. crepe has some ski resorts that he manages that do well, up in either vt or nh. since they closed in the winter time, the owner decided to spend more energy on the ski resorts (makes sense.) now that it's getting nicer out, he may reinvest some energy in mr.crepe, so may find another location for it. if that happens, dave's pasta dudes will let their customers know. sounds hopeful!
Actually, Mr. Crepe *is* coming back, AFAIK - the space on the bottom floor of the Citizens' Bank building (across from Downtown Wine & Spirits), last I heard, is being split between an "upscale flatbread pizza joint" and Mr. Crepe. This was heard from one of the property-management people in that building.
On the other hand, I have no idea what'll happen to the Buck-a-Book space.
did the property management people happen to drop a name about the "upscale flatbread pizza joint?"
the reason I ask is that up in Amesbury there's a fabulous flatbread place that's a mini-chain - "Amesbury Flatbread Company." their stuff is delicious, especially their brownies and gingerbread.
it'd be awesome to have them as an option closer to home!
The one thing Davis Square is missing is a good fresh fish market. Pemberton Farms has some fresh fish but the selection is very limited. Shaws in Porter has more selection but the quality is only average. The closest place I know with quality and selection is Whole Foods which is quite a ways from Davis Square.
that would be FANTASTIC. i love seafood, and freash seafood is (oddly enough, since boston is a harbor city) hard to come by unless i pay insane amount of money at whole foods...although i did notice a fresh seafood sign driving to medford on college ave--it's near the corner of college and medford (i think?). i've wondered what that place is all about.
yes, thank you! that's the one i saw (forgot that college turns into warner and then harvard past the rotary). haven't been there myself, but i'm very curious.
wow--i just looked a map; never noticed that college went up north, west of warner. i always just assumed it turned into warner 'cause it was the straight-est line. weird. thanks again!
Hi Angie The fishes are doing well! I bought a pleco a couple days later to put on cleanup duty--in the bag a 2" shrimp was included by mistake. My lord, that turned the fish into vicious little beasts (the poor shrimp did not last long).
There's a fish market in Ball Square (which is the intersection of Boston Ave and Broadway). It's not "near" Davis, but certainly closer than Fresh Pond. Not a fish-buyer myself so I can't say more.
if you are planning on heading over to Whole Foods at Alewife,(as suggested by clevernonsense) consider going over to Fresh Pond Seafood, not too much further. It's on the corner of Freshpond Parkway and Concord Ave, by the gas station. They have really yummy fish. I've made sushi with their fish and the sushi was delightful.
fresh pond, the one on trepelo in waltham, the one behind twin city plaza (best one ihmo) and the one on broadway in winter hill (though only if the old ladyis still alive, its been a few years since I went there)
