I just got 4 coupons for $5.00 off Similac baby formula in the mail, as well as what appears to be a half-sized tin of the stuff. I'm due any time now, but I'm pretty sure I'm going to be able to breastfeed exclusively. If anyone can make use of these things, let me know, and I'll send them to work with my fiancé on Monday! They'll be available for pick up in the Henderson Carriage building on Mass Ave.

a totally valid point (and those are some eager breasts you apparently have!). Mostly my point was that in emergency situations, all but the most strident breastfeeders need a little help, simply since modern life means we've got things to do (one post partum DSLJer was out of the hospital a full 2 days when she was back in the ER again, and had to leave the 5 day-old baby with the visiting grandma for the 5 hour trip). Having a little supplemental feed is a good idea.

If you keep producing prodigiously (ok, I love that phrase), you might also want to look into the breast milk banks, and help another mom out.

and good luck with your new human being!

Dear [livejournal.com profile] molyflogs, welcome to the wonderful world of receiving parenting advice from non-parents. ;) With all due respect to [livejournal.com profile] thespian, please don't let your resolve be shaken by someone who hasn't been there.

As a mom who has successfully breastfed two babies, let me add that yes, breastfeeding is very difficult sometimes, but keeping formula in the house is not the right answer. Succumbing to the temptation to feed formula "just this once" can really damage your supply and disturb the mini-ecosystem of the nursing relationship. Having resources and a support system lined up in advance is a better answer. And this is not just the "strident breastfeeder" opinion, although I will happily admit to that classification. ;)

I'll echo [livejournal.com profile] wneleh and say that you should feel free to PM me or email (this same username at gmail) if you need support, advice, resources, etc.. And good luck!

actually, due to other posts you've made on this subject, you were one of the strident breastfeeders whom I have seen berate women who did in fact need help. Thanks for stepping forward. Opinions like this on both sides of the debate are far more damaging to women who have been unable to successfully breastfeed. Go you!

Because women who've had surgery on their breasts aren't allowed to have babies? People like you caused me to nearly starve my children, and I am VERY thankful for formula.
