I just got 4 coupons for $5.00 off Similac baby formula in the mail, as well as what appears to be a half-sized tin of the stuff. I'm due any time now, but I'm pretty sure I'm going to be able to breastfeed exclusively. If anyone can make use of these things, let me know, and I'll send them to work with my fiancé on Monday! They'll be available for pick up in the Henderson Carriage building on Mass Ave.

Hi. Hope all goes well with your pregnancy. If you put a Subject line on this post, people are more likely to see it.

Have you had another baby? I ask only because if you haven't, I don't think you can be 'pretty sure'. I've been watching a dozen of my friends have babies this last year and even the ones who are breast feeding successfully and pumping enough for anticipated feedings have still needed the occasional boost from formula to be available. Unless they're expiring a month after your due date, you may well want to hold onto those until you're certain that you produce enough milk, that you'll never have to leave your baby's side for 18 months, and that you'll always be in places where you feel comfortable hauling out your breasts and it will be possible to do so.

a totally valid point (and those are some eager breasts you apparently have!). Mostly my point was that in emergency situations, all but the most strident breastfeeders need a little help, simply since modern life means we've got things to do (one post partum DSLJer was out of the hospital a full 2 days when she was back in the ER again, and had to leave the 5 day-old baby with the visiting grandma for the 5 hour trip). Having a little supplemental feed is a good idea.

If you keep producing prodigiously (ok, I love that phrase), you might also want to look into the breast milk banks, and help another mom out.

and good luck with your new human being!

Dear [livejournal.com profile] molyflogs, welcome to the wonderful world of receiving parenting advice from non-parents. ;) With all due respect to [livejournal.com profile] thespian, please don't let your resolve be shaken by someone who hasn't been there.

As a mom who has successfully breastfed two babies, let me add that yes, breastfeeding is very difficult sometimes, but keeping formula in the house is not the right answer. Succumbing to the temptation to feed formula "just this once" can really damage your supply and disturb the mini-ecosystem of the nursing relationship. Having resources and a support system lined up in advance is a better answer. And this is not just the "strident breastfeeder" opinion, although I will happily admit to that classification. ;)

I'll echo [livejournal.com profile] wneleh and say that you should feel free to PM me or email (this same username at gmail) if you need support, advice, resources, etc.. And good luck!

actually, due to other posts you've made on this subject, you were one of the strident breastfeeders whom I have seen berate women who did in fact need help. Thanks for stepping forward. Opinions like this on both sides of the debate are far more damaging to women who have been unable to successfully breastfeed. Go you!

Because women who've had surgery on their breasts aren't allowed to have babies? People like you caused me to nearly starve my children, and I am VERY thankful for formula.

In general, a breast-feeding mom who thinks she needs to supplement with formula is usually mistaken. It generally stems from a misunderstanding of the way the system works. Most moms go through a period of thinking that they "aren't making enough milk" and usually this is not actually the case.

Advising a soon-to-be mom to keep formula around "just in case" is potentially extremely damaging to the breastfeeding relationship. And it is entirely untrue that only "strident" breastfeeders can do it without help.

It's not like giving the coupons away means she can never buy formula in the future so I don't even know what this has to do with her post.

Yes, a very good idea to get it out of the house. (Similac giving out "free" formula & coupons is all sorts of evil.)

If you have issues with breastfeeding, all sorts of help is available; feel free to PM me if you end up needing help hooking up with resources, and good luck!

I wouldn't be able to go to Cambridge, but if you don't get takers for the coupons I'd be happy to have them if you could drop them in the mail. Let me know and I can PM you my address. Good luck with everything. Having a new baby can be challenging but so rewarding. Our son is almost 5 months!

Oops. I misread the location. However, I live in Watertown now so my comment still stands. I totally understand if you want to share them with a current Davis-squarian. :)

If nobody takes the sample, there's a Somerville mom who collects them for foster moms in the area and will pick it up - if you're on the Somerville Moms list, you can search past posts for her email; if you can't find it, let me know and I can email it to you!
