So today was my last chemo! Huzzah! So, a few related questions:

1. Anyone have any connections that could be helpful to getting discounted/free appetizers at a bar for a group of 15-20 young adult cancer survivors on a somewhat regular basis? I'm the co-chair of the Boston Chapter of i[2]y which is an org for people diagnosed between 15-40 and I've been seriously slacking at organizing a Stupid Cancer Pub Crawl. Ideally would be close to the red line, have space for a small group, and feel bad for us so they give us things for free. :P Cancer is expensive and I'm poor, what can I say? Alternatively, if you are another young adult cancer survivor and would like to be involved in a cool organization with people who get it, let me know!


2. So, what's left of my hair is in this really weird half grown state. I cut it down to about an inch when it started falling out and now, 3 months later, it's thinned significantly and I have hair anywhere from barely sprouted to a shaggy 2+ inches. It also sticks straight up Sonic the Hedgehog style. I always had my hair long and want to grow it long again, so I'm at a loss of what to do with it. Anyone have a salon/stylist suggestion for someone who is adept at short hair styles on women, as well as helping style and cut growing out hair, and not look like a crazy mullet? 


3. Only semi related, but feel bad for me, I just went through 6 months of chemo. :P I'm looking for a desk that is smaller than the one I currently have for my desktop. I don't really care what it is as long as it will hold my monitor and keyboard. The one I have now is too big in my very small room, so I'd like to move it back to the kitchen to be used as a shelf. Does anyone happen to be getting rid of one for Sept 1?  I can take away anything that will fit in my Civic. Thanks!

Size is 28.25" length, 18.5" depth, 28" height. It has wheels, and a small shelf under the top. Sorry about the old tape marks along the front, but that's really the only actual problem with the desk.

If this is *too* small, we have a corner desk we will be selling at some point (not quite ready yet for that one), which is a bit bigger, but not huge.

Oh that would be PERFECT! I always read LJ too late to get in on the pre-CL listsings and I'm a little scared of totally random CL. I get back to Somerville around 6ish on worknights so I could swing by to pick it up any time after that!

Hair stuff

I cannot stop recommending Linda Kirk at Judy Jetson's in Porter. I cut my hair short from longer than shoulder length a few months ago. I asked in a few different forums for recommendations, and Judy Jetson's/Linda Kirk came up a lot, so I checked her out. Linda loves doing short hair, she charged me 55 and was super sweet, as was the woman working at the front desk. I honestly can't say enough good things about her. You should just call her. In fact, the salon number is 617-354-2628.

I don't know what time your outings would be, but I know that Redbones has a special deal from 4-6pm at the bar downstairs offering certain appetizers 1/2 off, I *think* Monday through Friday. I think Unos in Harvard Square has some kind of deal between 4 and 7pm as well as after 10pm, though I don't have the details. I suggest calling them both to make sure the deals are still on. Also, I have seen signs for 1/2 price tapas at an Indian restaurant in Davis, but I don't recall which restaurant it is (there is more than one in Davis).

I might actually know someone who could work with your hair--will check with her and message you with what I find out.

Also, Salon Cu on Broadway was doing a 10% off special for people that mentioned they found them on Yelp with certain stylists.

I had my waist length hair hacked off to the chin by Jacqui and was very happy with the results.

Congratulations on completing the marathon of chemo!

The awesome short-hair people I know aren't in Davis, but here they are anyway: Dana at Liquid, and Derek at Pure - both in the South End. Liquid's on Tremont and Pure is on Harrison. Neither very expensive, and both worth the trip if you can't find your star match in Davis!

Grendel's Den in Harvard Square also has discounted food (if you buy drinks) in the late afternoon/early evening, though that venue might be a little too small for your needs. Still, it's worth investigating.

I had a similar problem with my hair after finishing chemo. I had shoulder length and when it started thinning, I cut it to about chin length. When chemo was over I found that new hair was growing in among the longer strands I still had and looked a little weird. (yes, mullet) I ended up giving my hair about 3 months and then I went and got it cut.

SSC: i went to a cheap chain haircut place (similar to Supercuts - it might have been Great Clips, in North Carolina, not sure if they have them here) since I figured it was going to look fucked-up for a while no matter what they did to it. I got a typical short hair cut, a little longer on top, very short on the sides, sort of thing. it at least looked presentable then.

A bit over a year later, I have a thick slightly wavy mess, with the bottom pieces coming all the way down to my shoulders and the rest long enough to get in a ponytail (with a few shortest strands falling out that I barette into place).

Anyway tldr but my advice:
your hair will be weird for another year or three. Sorry :(
Don't spend a lot of money on it, there's not much the super expensive hair places can do that the cheap places can't, when you basically just want it at a uniform length.

Congrats on finishing chemo! I hope you recover quickly.

Pub ideas: I know that Davis_Sq had a meet up at Joe Sent Me, which is near davis on Mass ave at Cameron, and they gave us a nice set of free appetizers (crudites, fried pickles, chicken wings). You could try them.

Re: Young adult survivor stuff: Also check out thesamfund.org if you haven't already. They give out scholarships and grants to survivors (not just for school-- for almost anything!) and also do meet ups. They're national, but HQs are in Boston. Great people.

One thing no-one told me about ahead of time that you might want to be aware is that your hair may grow back differently at first. I've always had baby-fine hair with no body whatsoever — except when it grew back after chemo+radiation, when for six or eight months, I had wavy hair. Freaked me out at first, but my oncologist assured me it wasn't all that unusual, I foundI it absolutely fascinating. After a few months, I got a haircut, and it turned out that all the recent growth was back to it's normal limpness, as it has been ever since. But it was cool while it lasted!
