In preparation for the Somerville Bicycle Committee's Tour de Somerville on October 15, "Arts in the 'Ville", I made a map of all locations I know of in Somerville that are involved in producing, exhibiting, or performing art (other than private homes):

http://goo.gl/NpP19

The symbols on my map:
Blue balloon - Artist work space; most also have some public events such as Open Studios
Red balloon - Live music venue
Green balloon - Anything else, especially exhibition and performance spaces, retail stores, or places that offer classes
Red pushpin - Recording studio
Purple balloon - Disused theatre

The distinction between blue and green balloon is pretty arbitrary on my part, and won't really matter in the end once this turns into a bike route.

I'm sure I've made some errors and have missed some venues. Can you help me refine it? When it's finished, I hope to turn it over to the Somerville Arts Council for future maintenance.

It sounds like you've used blue for normally private spaces, and green for normally public spaces, maybe?

I think your initial instinct to designate places where the public are normally expected/welcome as opposed to places where the public should call/email ahead of time (or wait for an invitation) is probably worth valuing. :-)

Thanks for this public service. The Unity and Congregational Churches on College Avenue sometimes host theater performances. The Prince print and framing gallery on Highland and Blue Cloud Gallery in Ball Square are always worth a visit.
