The nation's emergency alert system will undergo a nationwide test tomorrow at 2PM. Expect TV and radio stations (including satellite) to broadcast a thirty-second test message—and when it happens, don't panic. :) More information is available on FEMA's site.

And yet, I (like most people I'm guessing) will never see it.

No TV at home, maybe a radio or two... but I'll be at work, where there is neither. (Maybe that's why they're testing it at 2PM.)

Far more effective would be a cell phone and browser based system.

I've now received this message through six different channels, including those meant to distribute actual emergency messages like MIT's campus alert system. What is the point is sending out countless messages alerting people to the test nature of a message that is going to say it's a test...

For a thirty second test, I've already spent several minutes thinking about it, and it hasn't even happened yet.
