Is there anyplace/anyone around Somerville that can root an Android Phone? My friend is on me to get my phone rooted, and sent me instructions on how to do it. But my competence for such things is less than zero. I dropped into a couple of places on Broadway, but they seemed to know a lot about jailbreaking (?), but not much about rooting.

xdadevelopers (online) has very simple rooting instructions, as does cyanogenmod - also online.

jailbreak and root are (I believe) two terms for the same basic process.

Edited to add: If your friend is so adamant that you root your phone, I'd make him/her do it. >.>

And yes, they're the same thing -- though there's degrees and quirks to each model of phone. Getting rid of the battery-sucking poorly designed apps is a start. And then there's getting rid of Carrier IQ.

why do they want you to root it? what is it not doing that they are determined it should do?

I ask because there are several simple solutions to many of the most frequent needs that you get from rooting it.

Try getting rid of carrier IQ without root.

I know there are plenty of reasons why one might want to root a phone. But I am wondering, in this case (since the question was not 'I want to root the phone because X') what the actual goals of the OP are in any possible rooting.

(I was going to root mine in order to use it as a tether and to get at several things that Virgin Mobile has removed, and then I found Quick Settings, which gave me access to all the things VM had hidden from users, but not removed)

(of course, my phone does not have Carrier IQ on it, mostly, I think, because Virgin Does Not Care enough to actually delve into that sort of support. And their phones are in the $100-$150 range, and once you buy them, they are yours, unlike AT&T or Sprint, with their contracts that mean they actually need to ensure connectivity and stuff. Virgin tends to be, 'Well, you will have connectivity, or you won't. Buy a better phone if you are having probems.')

I'm pretty handy with such things. I'm around weekends and evenings!

I used "SuperOneClick"...I think it's not something that would normally be available as an over-the-table paid service. With many if not most carriers it will void the warranty on your phone.

Most of the cellphone repair shops will do it - there's one called "iFixYour" or something like that upstairs from Bloc11 that should have info on that.

Also check with Boston iPhone Repair (located in Harvard Square, upstairs from Oonas, and not limited to iPhones). I only have experience with their hardware repairs (I had the Home button on my iPhone replaced: It was fast, and way cheaper than a new phone).
