I know there are lots of moving posts, but they all seem to be about larger moves.

I'm moving from Somerville to Medford at the end of the month a grand total of about a mile - I have my bedroom furniture, a few other small pieces of furniture (small bookcase, filing cabinet), a bunch of boxes, and an aquarium (that I'm mostly taking apart myself - I just need someone to carry it out of this apartment and into the new one). I've found that most movers won't do jobs of under 4 hours. When I moved from Waltham to here, it took the movers a total of about an hour and a half - and that was including the drive. I had wonderful movers before but I can't find their name or number for the life of me!

Before you suggest it - I really can't orchestrate the move on my own. I'm recovering from chemo and don't have the strength to move most of my boxes, much less furniture. I'd rather hire professionals and not absolutely decimate friendships. That said, cost is also important. I believe last time the straight cost was under $200, plus tip for the two man crew. In my ideal world, I would keep the cost around there.

Thanks!

Call Precision movers. Their prices are good, they are excellent and careful, and this is not their busiest time of year. A shorter move shouldn't be an issue.

Second this. I had them unload upack containers and am pretty sure I only paid for 2 hours of time. The rate was very reasonable and the guys did a great job.

Thirded. Several years ago they moved me from Cambridge to JP in about two hours, and didn't charge a minimum. Most recently, they packed up my place in Boston, carted everything to the Cape and unpacked 80% of my boxes in about 10 hours. They came in a couple hundred under the estimate, and were about half of what I was quoted by other companies. I love, love, love those guys!

Have you heard of these guys? I don't know if it would work for you, but it might be worth a call:

ETA: I see that the article has been archived now, but it said that the company charges $40/hour for one man and one bike, $75/hour for 2 men and 2 bikes, and $105/hour for 3 men and three bikes. Each bike trailer can haul up to 300 pounds of boxes and furniture, and the company specializes in smaller moves for students and young professionals.

A friend of ours moved his stuff from a storage unit over by Inman into Davis a few months back. He used (we think) Sunshine Movers (http://www.sunshine-moving.com/index.html) and was pretty happy with them.

Can never recommend Intelligent Labor highly or frequently enough. I don't think any job is too small for them.

When I moved two years ago, Gentle Giant had a four hour minimum for morning starting times, but a only a two hour minimum for afternoon starting times. I was perfectly happy with them - my move was not an especially demanding one, but it was important to me that everything go smoothly. And it did.

I have used both Precision Movers and Man with a Van for small moves and would highly recommend both of them.

another vote for precision. i moved almost around the corner (ie, down one (long) block and up a few blocks) and i think it took them two and a half hours, there was no minimum, and they were super quick and efficient.

I always use Nick's and am happy about it. In this off-season, I'd think any of the not-chain companies would be happy for the work....
