Baked goods!

Am I missing something, or is there no good bakery anywhere in Davis, Porter, Harvard, or Central? I don't mean a coffee shop that has good scones; there are tons of those. I mean a place with a big display case full of cookies, rugelach, and other pastries where I can buy a mixed box. The only one I know of is La Contessa in Davis, and (sorry but...) I don't think it's very good. I want chocolate and jam and flaky buttery pastry and I don't want to have to go to Brookline or the North End to get it, darn it! Help?

Lyndell's in Ball Square has some good stuff. Do not be deterred by the terrifying action-figure-sporting children's birthday cakes in the window.

Anyway, I was going to recommend Quebrada. And I hear that someplace wonderful just opened at Boston & Winthrop St. (Medford, I guess?), but I know nothing more.

It's on Medford Hillside, which is also a bit of a trek from Davis, but the 94 and 96 stop just across the street. Haven't tried it yet, but I keep hearing good things.

If we're that far into Arlington, the greek bakery across from quebrada has the best baklava in the universe.

O'Naturals used to be a bakery called Carberry's, and they still make some pastries that look pretty good. (I haven't actually eaten any lately but they used to be great.) On Elm St. outside of Davis heading towards Porter.

La Contessa in Davis for a pâtisserie and The Danish Pastry Shop at Tufts (Boston&Winthrop/Curtis/whatever the cross street is at that point). Pemberton Farms (Mass Ave near davis) is an organic grocery with a decent selection of breads.

There's still a Carberry's in Central Square, which...well, it depends on the day and the bakers. Their croissants are flaky and good, but for some reason they seem to be strictly enforcing a "no more than one teaspoon of icing on any one pastry, no matter how large" rule that's turned my beloved heklas into a shadow of their former selves.

But there's Rosie's Bakery in Inman! If you're going to range as far as Central, you might as well go the little bit north.

And if you're willing to limit yourself to pies and a few cookies, Petsi Pies, a little bit outside Porter on Beacon Street (near the Star Market) is remarkable.

If you stand on your roof you can see Lyndell's in Ball Square. I haven't been in a couple years... damned shame since I live around the corner now... I think they'll suit your needs.

I'm biased against Lyndell's because they have make and sell hamentaschen but don't know what they are.

Lyndell's has some really yummy stuff (the chocolate dipped almond thingys are to die for) but i'm not sure how great their pastry is. it's worth at least trying, though.

the look of everything will simply knock you over... and then ask about any of their pastries and they'll pull one right out and cut you a sample without even asking... and everything they have (so far, that I've tried, anyhow) is so flippin' good...
