I have some questions about filming on the Mystic River.

As a few of you in this comm know, I'm making a movie. Because of the tiny budget I have, I nearly passed out when I heard the rates the MDC charges for shooting in the areas it governs ($24/hour for a cop on duty).

The scene I'd want to shoot is fairly small; a cast of 12 and a five-person crew (if that). We would not be shooting sound, and we would be using available light. From a distance, those who didn't know any better would probably think we were having a picnic.

My questions are: how heavily does the MDC police the Mystic River Reservation? What is the likelihood that our production would get shut down? Also, does the "we're film students" excuse still fly?

I can't answer your questions, but I do have one bit of advice -- stay far away from the LNG processing center (in Charlestown, across the river from the Schrafft's Center). I work here, and a couple of times coworkers have tried to take pictures of the river or whatnot, cops and/or feds come from out of nowhere and sternly admonish. It's kind of creepy, actually.

What with all the talk about terrorists commandeering LNG tankers and plowing them into cities, I guess I can understand why, but yeah, still sorta creepy.

It's pretty fun when tankers come in or out, too (once or twice a week). State Trooper dive team in the parking lot, Coast Guard choppers buzzing the building. It's a real hoot.

I’ve done a fair amount of shooting (SLR) around the assembly square, Orange line sections of the river. I have seen a grand total of one cruiser while I was on the far side of the orange line close to the MBTA property. Much to my surprise they just drove by with out bothering me at all. It is all public property and I have never seen any “no filming” signs anywhere. I would assume if your group was low key and you picked a spot off to the side they wouldn’t even bother to get out of the cruiser to check you out. Of course cops can be unpredictable creatures, so you never know. Good Luck.
