Dude still owes me money for the latte he stole after I waited half an hour to get into his joint on a day like yesterday. I have no problem with a "no outside drinks" policy. I have a huge problem with his swiping my coffee and placing it behind the bar with no explanation beyond, "you'll get it back when you leave."

There are plenty of places to get a good greasy breakfast without having to deal with bullshit. There are also plenty of places to get genuinely good Italian food... without having to deal with bullshit.

'Course, people still love Johnny D's despite years of serving cold eggs at premium prices. No accounting, I guess.

Weird. Never got cold eggs from Johnnys. I have, however, gotten rude service and mediocre food at Rosebuds. Which is why, despite the glam exterior, I don't go there anymore.

Every time I've eaten there in the past two years, either the eggs or the potatoes have been cold. Not just lukewarm, mind you. I'm talking cold. The phenomenon seems to be much worse with poached eggs, but given that I'm dropping $10-12 for breakfast, I think I should be able to expect a little more than I've been given.

Glam exterior is the only thing Rosebud's got going for it. I've written it off as a loss.

The exterior of the place is really what I love most. I know the owner too...that sounds like something he would do.

I don't like Johnny D's breakfasts much. And the staff there is usually uber pretentious.

Eh. I just make a point of telling the story every once in a while. I can't be the only one who's had a less than happy experience there.

And hell, I would have gone back outside to finish it if he had said something. I like my lattes.

To be honest, there isn't a hell of a lot in Davis that I like or recommend. I always give a second chance, but usually wind up disappointed, aggravated or both. Nevertheless, there are a lot of neat "shots" in the area. I'm trying to find the brighter sides before I leave, if only visually.

heh, i like the place, but i had a stupid encounter with the manager too. i was having a meal alone and asked for hot water from the waitress. when i pulled out my dry tea leaves, the manager barked at me and told me harshly that he would lose his liquor license. i understand, but geez.. be nice.

The area does have it's visual high spots, and I'm glad that the diner has been restored and remains functions despite the rapid transition that the area is going through. Gentrification is bringing changes, and already there are places that are Not-As-Good^TM since Davis started its upswing. Redbones, for instance, has a much better beer list and some interesting additions to their menu as compared to ten years ago, but the on the whole, the food just doesn't sparkle like it used to. I'm genuinely glad for Anna's and Downtown Wine & Spirits, but I've got mixed feelings on a lot of other offerings.

friends of mine came to visit last spring and we went to the rosebud for breakfast twice, and had a pleasant experience both times.... i liked our waitress. (on the other hand, i went once for dinner last summer and had a hamburger and was disappointed.... but the breakfasts are nice.)

what does the owner look like? is he the older dude who sits at the door a lot of the time? if so, i didn't know he even worked there. i thought he was some random dude saying hi when we walked in. i've only ever seen three people in there: him, the bartender, and the waitress.

Redbones new manager is responsible for a lot of the food menu changes. I still enjoy the quality of food there, but I miss it circa 10 years ago when the ambience was a lot better.

Downtown Wine and Spirits is another great place. : )

There are many newer additions to the square which I avoid and there are changes in some of the established places with I feel were not, necessarily for the better. I understand that businesses need to compete to be successful, but the overall feeling and attitude over the last few years has left me feeling more and more alienated from Square Life as it changes.

My favorite time to be there (in the Square) is early, Saturday mornings before my shift at the VFW. It's quiet and cozy.

Me and my friends were the first customers when they reopened 9 or 10 years ago. Their sign says they were established in 1941, but they were actually closed for a good number of years. They took our picture, but never put it up, I guess we were a little too freaky looking for their wall.
