Place to park a car before receiving a parking sticker?

Greetings future neighbors!

I am moving into a place near Davis Square soon (either this weekend or the next) and have run into a bit of an issue. I have a car that I will need in the area (for my commute to work in the 'burbs) but haven't applied for a parking permit yet. I assume this will take a little while, and that I will probably be moved in and needing my car before the permit comes. Is there anywhere I can park without needing a permit (preferably somewhere I can keep the car overnight)? Any tips, tricks or suggestions?

Get the permit in person. As long as you have the right docs — your reg. with the new address is I think what they ask for these days (which screws students!) — they'll hand it to you right then.

To echo the other comments, it is actually very fast to get the permit when you go over to the office. But still you might have a night or two of parking when you first move before you can make the time to get over there. If you are renting somewhere with other tenants, or with a landlord who lives on site, then most people have two of the visitor's permits and I imagine would be happy to let you use one until you get your permanent sticker. (The visitor permit will let you park on the block by your house, and I think technically only for 3 consecutive days, but it should tide you over.)

It's good for two calendar days each week. I know several frequent visitors who have indeed been ticketed on their third day, so I'd assume they're recording plates of visitor permit users systematically in at least some places.

whatever you do, *don't* try to use a visitor parking pass for multiple days if you're a resident. you'll get tickets.

ever since the advent of all-resident parking in Somerville, it's basically been a running battle to find a decent parking space that won't a) net you a $XX ticket or b) expire in 2 hours or less. good luck!

Despite all the efforts to stamp them out, here and there I've seen an unrestricted space or two. (I hope the city doesn't write permit tickets for those spaces anyway.)

There's also the option of parking across the city line in a place that allows it.

Somerville Ave (from a little past Union, halfway to Porter, near Market Basket) has no-permit parking. I've stuck my car there for days before, not a worry or a peep - plus, you can grab the bus directly to Davis and back. (the 89, I think? I'd check.)

I left my car there for three days, on two occasions. I would park it on the side opposite of MB.

Also, you can get a temporary pass while you get your registration updated to be somerville, because you have to do that in order to get a sticker.

Yup. The bus in question (Lechmere to Arlington Center via Somerville Ave, Elm St, and Davis Square) is the 87, though, not the 89.
