two thoughts: 1. It's amazingly simple to do yourself. Having done it, it's work, don't get me wrong, but it's not complex. A carpet knife and a small crowbar (for the carpet boards around the edges) and you're really done. 2. You might ask the hardwood folks as they usually include it as part of their service.
My husband and I are also looking to get rid of the wall-to-wall carpet in the house we're buying -- the estimates for removing it we're getting from the hardwood floors people range from $400-$600. I think we're going to go the DIY route.
Let me know if you have any luck..i got similar estimates from the flooring people. I am hoping to find someone who can do it for half that, looking at handymen and junk removal companies etc, but was hoping someone here would have a recommendation.
It's manual labor and dusty work at that. It took me about 6 hours to pull up the rug and the disintegrated padding, and remove all the rug boards, and pull up extra staples they had thrown in for good measure in an area roughly 200sq ft. I also mopped it afterward.
Full set of tools you may want: carpet knife (splurge here and get the sturdy one, you may get lucky and not need it, but if you need it, you want it to cut through the carpet without going over it a number of times) Masks (the rug padding, in this case, had become dust, a light, yellow, nasty dust) Broom Dustpan needle-nose pliers (I used these for pulling up the spare nails and staples) small crowbar (the size of a screwdriver, they are really handy in this size and slip nicely under the rug boards plus won't dig in like a screwdriver will) Hammer (for getting the crowbar in underneath) Construction Bags (for putting the pieces in when you are done)
