Friends of the SPL

Hello folks: I'm not a member of the Friends of the Somerville Public Library, but I do love the library. And as a kid the library was a really important place for me.

They are competing for some learn and play kits, and have tweeted a couple of times looking for votes for their entry. I wouldn't ask if it required registration (I hate that too). You only have to select them from the pulldown menus and do a captcha for this one.

For the kids of Somerville, if you can spare a minute, go vote for them. The current totals look pretty reasonable, so a little bit of support might go a long way here. I also noted that it was possible to vote from my phone....

I voted! I voted for the west branch, since it makes you pick one of three branches and that's the closest to me.

Thanks. I couldn't figure out how to preview, and now I can't figure out how to edit to fix that...sigh.

Maybe there's a social media class at the library I can take...

It looks like you used the 'Rich Text' editor to compose it, and unfortunately that does not turn URLs into live links. To fix this:

- Click the blue-pencil icon to edit the post
- For each URL in your post (I see two of them), select and copy the URL. Click on the 'Link' icon (just to the right of the vertical bar in the Rich Text editor), and paste the URL into the little pop-up box that appears
- Click the 'Save Entry' button at the bottom of the edit window

PS: Offer to do a social media course at the library...Actually, now that I think if it, that's not a bad idea. We should get the local blogs/lj/lists to do a session on what their sites and missions are. With a smidge of software training thrown in.

You're welcome. If you use the HTML editor tab instead of the Rich Text tab, any URLs automatically become live links.

I don't know if LiveJournal is even on the radar of folks who teach 'Social Media' classes these days.

I know lots of librarians who teach social media classes (none of them local, though) and I'm sure I could get curriculum stuff from them if that would help.

I don't know that it would have to be detailed. But the basics of each platform with a bit of guidance on their strengths and weaknesses. In the case of FB frequent changes would be a weakness.

But I'd attend an hour session where each local blog/forum had about 5min to present their sites, and then talk about what kind of platform it is. And then maybe a sample post from each major type (FB, blog, forum, whatever). Oh, and maybe a brief intro to twitter where I get a lot of my local info lately. Some people have never even been shown twitter.
