Really wishing for a search feature because I'm pretty sure people have mentioned this place before.

Anyway, I'm looking at going to Martsa on Elm for a dinner date. Any reviews? or suggestions of a different place to go if you think it's really lousy? If you have a different place to recommend in the Davis/Porter area that's ethnic, that's great.

Thanks!

ETA: Thank you for all the wonderful help and advice. I'll probably try Martsa this time and go for House of Tibet another time in the nearish future.

I've only been once...

but I LOVED it. They were so friendly and helpful- and the food was far, far better than Rangzen, for me anyway. Try the lime soda! :)

Dollar for dollar, The House of Tibet is a better bet. And a nice date place [I went there on my second date with my now husband].

seconding house of tibet, particularly for a weeknight date (more crowded on weekends). went there on a wednesday for a first date; it was nearly empty, so service was impeccable. (unfortunately, that relationship didn't work out, but hey, now i know where i can get good tibetan in the neighborhood ;) )

I've never been to house of tibet, but I love Martsa.

I like Martsa. Food is good, service is good, prices are reasonable.

However, House of Tibet, not to far away (Holland Street in Teele Square) is absolutely fabulous, and somewhat less expensive.

I've been to Martsa a fair number of times, House of Tibet once. Maybe I had lousy company at House of Tibet, but Martsa definitely gets my vote.

Anyway, I don't think anyone would describe either as lousy, or even marginal.

I absolutely love Martsa. I've been trying to frequent them as much as possible to help them stay in business (because, well, things have a tendency to disappear in Davis). I don't have much experience with Tibetan outside of them, though, so I have no comparison.

My recommendations are the amdo-tsel, the steamed vegetable momos, and the hot lime drink. There're other fantastic dishes, but I'm blanking on the names.

I love the place too. Although they are small, they've always gone out of their way to accomodate the largeish groups I've gone there with. I've always found their food to be fresh, and extra tasty. I know nothing of House of Tibet as I've never eatten there.

I often go to Martsa. As everyone has pointed out, it has great food, reasonable prices, and good service.

My wife appreciates the numerous vegetarian options.

YUM to both. i feel like martsa has more selection, whereas house of tibet seems more simple (in a good way). both are very good. for a date, house of tibet might be a better atmosphere (more intimate and comfortable).
