My husband is interested in taking up yoga. Who knows of some local studios that would offer good classes for male beginners?

O2's basics classes seem to have a good balance of men and women in them and they do periodically offer an O2 for beginners workshop.

There's a thing called "Broga", which I've seen signs for at the Armory. It's for men and the website is here: http://www.brogayoga.com/classes/somerville-ma/

It's been a few years, but when I took Basic classes at O2 on Highland Ave. there were some male instructors who were great. Classes were mostly women, but there were definitely some men there.

Putting in another thumbs up for O2. The M:F ratio is higher than I expected, and I love pretty much every single instructor there. Great studio, lots of classes every day at many different levels, good instruction and a very happy atmosphere.

They're having a Basics for New Beginners class the Saturday after next (the 19th), 2-4pm. I'd recommend checking out their website and scheduler if you're interested :)

I started yoga at the BSC in Davis Square. They are always very welcoming of beginners, and the instructors will definitely give you extra help if you need it.

Is yoga different for men and women? It seems that more women are into it, but I'd never heard of it described as male or female before...

I love Bow Street Yoga in Union Square! They have male and female instructors, lots of beginner classes and usually a good mix of men and women in the sessions.

Soni Yoga on the corner of Walden and Concord in Cambridge has many male instructors and participants. It's a very nice studio.

And the Hatha Basics on Sunday mornings is totally doable for a beginner.

O2 has an awesome 2 hour session for people wanting to get into yoga. I've practiced a few times then took the session and it really shows you what you are doing and more importantly WHY you are doing it. I just looked on their site and don't see one scheduled right now but you could call and ask them. The class is called "O2 Yoga for Beginners"

I recommend Samara Yoga. I found their beginner classes to be good. They have several male instructors. They do a number of styles, which is nice for a beginner because you might not know which you like.

I'll ask my favorite teacher from the studio I go to in Andover. He knows the local yoga landscape really well and goes to classes in Cambridge and Somerville pretty often, and he's also great with beginners and dudes. I don't think he teaches anywhere close to you guys right now, but I could be wrong.

I've been a member of the Medford Work Out World (at Boston and Route 16) for over 5 years now and attend several yoga classes a week. They have about 6 classes on the schedule, all taught by really quality teachers (currently 3 of the teachers are Kripalu-trained), and the gym membership is $20 a month with unlimited class attendance. The yoga classes are definitely populated by both women and men, and there are definitely people of all levels and ages. I guess the downside of this compared to a yoga studio is that you have to get a membership to the gym, but the price is pretty hard to beat, and of course you're not just restricted to the yoga.

If he is more comfortable with a male class, Broga at the Armory is several times a week. For general yoga, my favorite place is Bow Street in Union. Anywhere he goes, a good instructor will ask who is new, who has injuries, and then make accommodations accordingly.
