Legal, quasi-legal or not-legal-but-safe places to park around Fresh Pond?

Does anyone know of a place to park around Fresh Pond without a Cambridge permit? I want to take a friend from out of town there but don't want to also be showing them Pat's towing... ;-)

While it has been many years since I have parked there, there is a parking adjacent to the Cambridge Water Dept building on Fresh Pond Parkway. There are two entrances, one on either end of the building. I'm assuming that this is public parking as it is adjacent to Kingsley Park. Check Google maps.

It's my understanding that one needs a Cambridge parking permit to park in those lots.
