SewLow Discount Fabrics in East Cambridge (on Cambridge Street) and SewFisticated (in the Twin Cities Plaza near East Cambridge) are the two I go to the most often for fabric. The Singer store in Davis Square on Elm St is useful for supplies like thread, needles, and interfacing but doesn't really have much in the way of fabric.
There's a sewing store in Davis near the Starbucks. It's not that great. You'd be better off taking the Red Line down to Downtown Crossing and going to Chinatown to Winmil Fabrics on 111 Chauncy St. There's another good fabric store on the same street.
Otherwise, some of my friends out in the suburbs go to Jo-Ann fabrics and I believe that there's a decent store in the Twin Cities Plaza in Cambridge near Union Square, Inman Square, and Lechmere.
You have a wealth of information. I tried Jo-Ann's today, and I drove all the way out to West Roxbury, which seems like its a lot longer than I should go just for Jo-Ann's. Thanks again.
The Jo-Ann's in Burlington is probably closer (and easier to get to) than West Roxbury. There's also Fabric Place in Woburn which has a larger suggestion. If you want closer, though, the two previously mentioned in East Cambridge are the way to go, although they are smaller. The one on Cambridge Street is better if you're not looking for straight cotton fabric, and it's a definite experience to walk around in there.
Thanks :) Yeah, the Jo-Ann's I went to was a hike and confusing to boot. Where/how far away is Woburn? I just moved to the area, so I don't know where anything is.
Ahem. Fixing my own misstype - Fabric Place has a larger selection, not suggestion. Sorry. Anyway, you get there by going up 93 N to 95 S, and take that one exit (I think it's exit 26, but I'm not sure) and Fabric Place is in the mall directly ahead of you when you get off the exit. http://www.fabricplace.com/ It's probably about 15 minutes driving from the Davis area. The Jo-Ann Fabrics in Burlington is slightly harder to find; it's in a mini-mall sort of thing off the Middlesex Turnpike, but the stores in it aren't labeled at the entrance, and you can't see the store from the road. I'd call them for directions if you need. Burlington is another northwestern suburb. In general, from this area it's easier to get to anything which doesn't involve going through the city to get to, for obvious reasons.
Take 93 North to 95 South to the Rte. 3 South/Middlesex Turnpike Exit (# 32B). Take a Left off the Exit and go straight through 1 light. At the second light take a Right (this is the plaza, the biggest thing on the sign is probably Demoulas). Make sure to take the first Right in the plaza and just follow all the way to the end where you'll find the Jo-Ann's.
