Boxes

Howdy, I am in need of some boxes. After many failed attempts to nab some from craigslist, I figured I'd just resort my local community for advice before I shell out dough to U-haul (albeit, they are not that pricey - would be cool to get them from a friend, neighbor, or local establishment). Besides wholesalers and liquor store folk, where do you suggest that I can procure some sturdy boxes in the area? :)

I tried the moving tag but it seemed to only bring up apartment-related searching.
Sorry if this is a duplicate post of any kind.

I went the liquor store route when I last moved -- made me look like a lush with variable taste.

I suspect you'll get a number of offers of boxes from dslj folks; people often seem to be getting rid of them.

When I asked this question here a few months ago, someone was kind enough to mention that Monday evening is when the businesses in Davis Square put out their recycling for Tuesday morning pickup. You can find a lot of boxes sitting on the sidewalk on Monday evening (and not just in front of the places that sell liquor).

I also had luck with freecycle and the "free" section of Craigslist.

Also, keep in mind that UHaul will buy back any boxes that you buy but don't end up using. I took advantage of that when it turned out that the boxes I had bought from them were too big.

My new roommate works for Utrecht and set aside boxes for me. I suspect if you called a store and asked, they would probably do the same for you.

Boxes from reams of paper are really great -- copy shops often have at least a few. Though I've never gone hunting them up here.

not all! we get a bunch of regular size boxes for smaller accessories, helmets, and whatnot.

If you end up having to buy boxes, I've found that the prices are much lower at Home Depot/Lowes. All except the very biggest sizes are < $1

Are you on Freecycle? Try asking there.

If you have time, www.usedcardboardboxes.com/ is cheaper than UHaul and more enviro friendly. You buy groups of boxes, rather than one at a time, but we used them when we moved to Somerville and they were great for the bulk of our needs (still needed to get some specific sizes from the moving companies). They deliver the boxes, so you'll have to wait a few days to get them.
