Any suggestions on a dermatologist in the area (or Cambridge or downtown)? Preferably one where I can get an appointment within weeks rather than months!

I recently had a great experience at Boston University School of Medicine Dermatology at 930 Commonwealth Avenue. I got an appointment within a week of calling and also felt really good about my office visit with Dr. Amy Chen. (A medical student assisted the doctor during the visit, but my care was provided by Dr. Chen.) http://www.bumc.bu.edu/derm/

If you have some sort of recurring rash or another problem that comes and goes unpredictably, many practices keep slots available for such patients so that you can come in while the problem exists and not have to wait months for an appointment. Long waits are the norm with dermatologists, alas.

I've been seeing Dr. Laura Houk at Harvard Vanguard (http://www.harvardvanguard.org/locations/cambridge) (over behind CRLS) and she is WONDERFUL. After a mediocre derm and one I flat-out didn't like, she took the time to *listen* to my concerns and walk me through all my options. I've been seeing her for acne, and she's been great and has moved on from treatments that weren't working (rather than telling me to just "give it another three months," like the last guy). She's also done a mole check and removed a couple of sketchy/annoying moles. I am a blubbering mess when anyone comes at me with needles or whatever, and she was totally great about working with me and not making fun of me. She's got a great manner with patients and I'm so glad I found her.

I can't recommend her highly enough. You also don't need to be in the HV network to see her, but I ended up switching my PCP over to them as well because I only had good experiences at that facility, and my own PCP's office staff was not great, plus it was a pain to trek out to JP.

I've seen Dr. Gerald Foster at the same Harvard Vanguard and he's also wonderful--very soothing with people like me who are anxious about skin problems.
