If anyone hasn't seen Jim's Big Ego live, I'd definately recommend seeing them. They're playing this thursday at Johnny D's. Any other jim fans out there? :)
uhm... it's hard to explain really. check out their mp3's. http://mp3.com/bigego and http://mp3.com/jiminfantino (hmmm... didn't they used to have a lot more songs online?)
I followed Jim a lot through the 90s, he was one of my favorite songwriters before there was a Big Ego. But at some point he decided he didn't want to be a folkie, he wanted to be rock. It's not the sound, it's the venues. He was playing with his band in all sorts of venues, including folk shows, and that was great. But he decided to start playing just the rock venues - places where everyone's drinking and smoking and talking and I can't hear him, and I stopped going to shows. For me, JBE is not about the music. Most of the bands he's put together play very well, and several of them have been fun and musically playful, but to me, it's all about Jim's words, his intonation, his facial expressions, his delivery.
So, they're playing Johnny D's! I haven't been following their schedule very closely for the past couple of years, so I don't know if this signals a change of attitude or a rare but worthy opportunity to actually see them perform. Either way, it makes me happy. Johnny D's is a venue where I can really enjoy JBE the way I'd like to. I think I'll be there.
I've only been following jim for the last year or so, but I know what you mean. Some of the places we've seen him at kinda sucked since no one seemed to be paying attention to the music (lizard lounge) though some venues had a really nice crowd (passim's). I haven't seen a show at Johnny D's yet but I hope you're right and it'll be really enjoyable. (and I hope they play some different stuff... their last couple sets were a bit repetative....)
Passim was always one of my favorite places to see Jim solo, and a fairly good place to see the Ego as well. but it was also one of the venues he was moving away from playing a lot at, which I think was sad. I somehow failed to notice he played there recently. Oops.
Johnny D's has good food, good sound, and good audiences. The bar area in the back is physically separate from the music area, and people go there to listen. It's a good place for bands that aren't trying to be super-loud. Everything from bluegrass to blues.
if you haven't already, i suggest you get on their mailing list. i've seen jim a zillion times since last december, and he's played in a bunch of great venues. one that was particularly enjoyable for me was his month-long stint (every wednesday in june 2002) at kendall cafe. it was hot and crowded, but here too the seating was separate enough from the bar (and so close to the stage i could have reached out and grabbed his ass). and he played at capo's in lowell, which was a decent folk venue. there are still some pretty good shows going on. don't miss any more!
Yeah, I do miss seeing Jim, I should probably get back into the habit. I went to all of the shows titanic was recorded at (some of his best shows ever, IMO), and I once even co-hosted a Jim Infantino house concert... and now I haven't seen him perform at all for a year.
Speaking of JBE at Passim... can I bug you again for a copy of the (second?) Halloween show (was it 1999?!) where Jim read --- ack, why can't I remember her name, I hope she doesn't read LJ -- whatshername dressed up as Napkin Poetry? I won third place in the costume contest myself, and would like to someday own a copy of the show. :/
Also, in all this discussion of Jim, no one has brought up the second excellent reason to go to the Johnny D's show: It's a benefit for the Somerville Homeless Coalition (http://www.somervillehomelesscoalition.org)!!!!
