Rumor is (I have a business in the same block) that they are moving to a location in Cambridge, but no news yet where it is. Also, the Japanese restaurant in the same block plans to also move into the space and start offering Doowee-like fare as well (I can't speak for how it will be, but that's the scoop)
According to DooWee's Facebook page, he's going to be working with Wonder Bar in Allston, and also opening something in London. (Yes, that London. Across the pond.)
He (Duy, the owner) also said that a unique Chinese restaurant will be moving into the Somerville space, and that he helped to develop part of the menu.
So, I think it sounds as if some of DooWee's fare (the baos, I hope) will survive locally.
I'm sorry to see him go. The food was terrific, and the prices were unbeatable.
I haven't heard anything about a Cambridge location, but I guess you never know. Duy has his fingers in a lot of pots, so to speak.
I heard all of the same things from the woman working the counter on their last day. She said they'd be keeping the baos, but didn't say anything about the crispy chicken hearts...
On the restaurant front, Addis/the Ethiopian one south of Porter closed suddenly. A sign said "we're moving" without saying where, but even that's gone today.
I want to be sad about that, but the fact is that the Porter-adjacent outpost of Addis Red Sea was vastly inferior to the original restaurant in the South End. Every time I'd ever gone there, the service was glacially slow and the food just wasn't anywhere near as good as it should have been. Way better Ethiopian fare can be had at Fasika in East Somerville.
Oh, not just me! I only went 2-3 times, despite living nearby and liking Ethiopian food, but I had similar thoughts. Well, I don't remember the service any more, but a vague sense that the food was okay but neither good enough nor ample enough to justify the price.
There's an Eritrean place in Central Square; been there? East Somerville's probably much more annoying for me to get to.
The last time I was at the Eritrean place was years ago, and I remember not liking it much because there was a pronounced sourness to the food that I found off-putting. I don't know if that's a feature of Eritrean food, if they were having an off night, or what. It's worth checking out to form your own, more current opinion. :)
Word is that no, they're not moving. Duy is working on opening a new location in London (UK) so that's his major focus, and he's partnering with WonderBar in Allston to sell a selection of his baos. He also says he's planning on bottling his sauces and is helping with the menu at the Asian place that's moving into the DooWee spot.
