Just got my maid of honor dress for a friend's wedding in September, and rather than give another red cent to the David's Bridal Wedding Industrial Complex, I'm looking for an amazing local seamstress/tailor to do some alterations. Have car, able to travel.

Thanks for your suggestions!

Have you tried Eleni's of New York, right in Davis Square? I know some people say she's hard to work with, but her tailoring is perfect. I had a halter bridesmaid dress tailored by Eleni (instead of David's Bridal). She had me put it on and just kind of did her thing, and made that dress fit me perfectly, including shortening strap and having it lie flat, bust darts, taking in the back, and adding a catch at the top of the zipper.

A few things:
-yes, she's hard to understand (heavy accent and vague, I'm a talented seamstress motions)
-yes, she'll give you attitude, but only if you approach her with a chip on your shoulder to start
-yes, it takes time to get something tailored (4-6 weeks was my lead time) but it was so worth it!

I recommend the excellent Zoya Designs in Teele Sq. She altered a gown and 2 cocktail dresses for me. The result was perfection.

I second Zoya. She did a great job on my daughter's flower girl dress

Robin Chalfin is incredible. Besides being an incredibly talented seamstress, her business model is to *come to your home* for fittings, whisk away the dresses, and bring them back to you ready to go. She altered my wedding dress and a friend's wedding dress (the latter under emergency repair circumstances), and is nothing but wonderful.

Locally, I recommend Porter Square Dry Cleaners and Tailors, which is at 89 Elm across the Street for the Porter Square shopping center. (In the buiding that has the used furniture store and a nail place). They have done alterations on 2 bridesmaids dresses for me and it was super inexpensive, great work, no problems.

For my wedding gown, I used Fay Carraher in Billerica. Her info can be found on wedding websites like Wedding Wire. I highly recommend her for formal gowns. She did amazing work on my wedding dress at a fraction of the cost of what David's Bridal quoted me.

Had a good experience at http://astgikstailoring.com/ with a bridesmaids dress last year -- it's over on the other side of Fresh Pond in Belmont so it's a little more of a hassle to get to, but she got the job done fast and at a reasonable price (though I haven't got much context to compare to on this). It was one of those aaaargh panic situations where the bride picked something strapless and the shop didn't have the size+style in stock, so when the actual dress came in (at the last minute, naturally) there were a number of unpleasant surprises that needed to be dealt with to prevent, uh, further "surprises". She solved it, no wardrobe malfunctions were had, I was happy.
